Essay-Thesis

Coming up with your thesis statement:

    • Choose one of the following three prompts and respond to it by comparing and contrasting two of the short stories we have read. Your response should be simplified into one sentence to form your thesis statement.
      1. Compare and contrast the parent-child relationship in “Sam the Athlete” and “The Metaphor”, paying special attention to trust, communication, and emotional intelligence.
      2. Compare and contrast sportsmanship in “Harrison Bergeron” and “Sam the Athlete”; consider how the two young men deal with their successes and failures.
      3. Compare and contrast coming-of-age in “The Metaphor” and “Sam the Athlete” with specific consideration to how young people approach “fitting in” and creating identities for themselves.
      4. Compare and Contrast the different influence Charlotte’s mother and Ms. Hancock on Charlotte emotional development.

compare-and-contrast essay analyzes two stories by either comparing them, contrasting them, or both (we’ll be doing both). The purpose of writing a compare and contrast essay is not to state the obvious but rather to illuminate subtle differences or unexpected similarities between two stories. Your thesis should be your stance on one of the above topics and should be general, not specific to the stories — thesis statements are comments on the human condition. They do not mention character names, story names, or specifics of stories.
