  • Once you have finished your discussion and have updated your self assessment you can begin reading Section 6 (Reindeer Games-Valentine Heart)

  • Your group’s discussion for Section 6 is likely going to be on Thursday, as scheduled, but if your group is able, you can have it tomorrow.
  • Tomorrow is a shortened class, 11-12:15 to allow for parent teacher interviews.

Lit Circles Section 5: Plot

Good morning everyone, here is the plan for today’s class.  Wednesday will be a shortened class, so check in with your group and plan accordingly for your two scheduled discussions this week.

  • Reading Section 5-“Rowdy Gives Me Advice About Love-Reindeer Games” if you are already finished, enjoy some silent reading time, or work on No Red Ink.
  • Work for Section 5. For some of you, you will be doing the original role, but for those in groups of 5, you will be doing the final role.
  • If you are able to have your discussion today, check in with your group, and decide on a time, otherwise plan for tomorrow.
  • Remember to share each of your reflection questions relating to theme, I have been marking them and am enjoying the different perspectives of each of you.

Lit Circles Section 3: Conflict

Good morning everyone,

Here is the plan for our first Wednesday in class! Discussion #3 is today, and I will be listening in on most of your discussions today, and some tomorrow.

This section’s literary element is conflict. We are now 1/3 of the way through the novel, so you should have some idea about what type(s) of conflict are driving the plot. Discuss and update your literary element log with evidence, but also a conflict statement.

When your group is finished the discussion, update self assessment, rotate roles, and begin reading Section 4: “Slouching Toward Thanksgiving” up to not including “Rowdy Gives Advice About Love”

Notice that you have a discussion again tomorrow, in the second half of class. I made this reading section a little shorter to account for that, but you may have some homework tonight, so use your class time wisely.

The first 4 sets of notes are due on Sunday evening, I am giving you a bit more time, so that you can add more detail etc. Please fill out a reflection form and hand in on teams when completed.

Lit Circle Section 3: Literary Element Setting

Hi everyone, today will mostly be a work block, here is what you should be working on:

  • Finish reading Section 3-“How to Fight Monsters” up to “Slouching Toward Thanksgiving”
  • Complete your role for Section 3-you will be handing the first 4 sections after Thursday’s discussion. Ask me what mark I’d give you, see if you can add more details.
  • If your group is ready to have a discussion any time after 1-1:30, please do so, as you will have a discussion on Thursday also.
  • Literary Element of this section, Setting!  Update your literary element reading log with evidence from the story, how does setting impact the plot so far?
  • No Red Ink-Commas

Lit Circles Section 2-First Day as a Cohort

Hi everyone, A-Z! Today is our first day as a cohort and here is what we will be doing:

  • 20 minutes to polish your work for Section 2 for today’s discussion.  Some of you need to upload your work, maybe add another question.
  • If you are done all that, enjoy 20 minutes of silent reading.

Discussion #2- I will send 3 groups to the library, we will rotate through the groups, which allows me to listen to those in the classroom.

  • Update your self assessment, did you achieve the goal you set after Discussion #1?
  • Set a new goal, rotate the roles forward.
  • Read your new role, make sure you understand the expectations.

Begin to read Section 3-How to Fight Monsters–Slouching Toward Thanksgiving

Tomorrow’s class will be mostly a work block, finishing Section 3, doing the role, and updating your literary element log with the element “Setting”. You will be handing in the first 4 sets of notes at the end of discussion 4.

Lit Circle Discussion #1

Hi everyone, here is the schedule for Thursday (A-L) and Friday (M-Z),

  • Let’s review and download the self assessment before beginning your first discussion.
  • Summarizer sets the timer and makes sure everybody is ready and work is uploaded.
  • When your discussion is complete, fill out your own self assessment for this discussion and set a goal for the next one on Monday.
  • Rotate the roles forward-if you were A, now you are B, if you were B, now you are C, etc. Read over your new role, and read Section 2.
