Monthly Archives: April 2020

Wednesday April 29th, 2020

Hello Everyone,

Here are some of the documents that you will need in order to start working on our Literature Circle Readings and Discussions.

*Please aim to have your novels completed by approximately June 5th….so when you are creating your reading schedule with your group, please keep this tentative date in mind…the first document is a reading schedule.

*The remaining documents are your ‘roles’.  These roles must be rotated so that each week each member has a different role.  Depending on group size, not every role will be covered, so choose roles that will evoke discussions among your members.

For the rest of this week…your tasks:

  1.  Create a reading schedule with your group.  This means you will have to connect with your group members to arrange a time to either discuss or arrange your schedule. There will be two Office 365 Word documents below –one for Block C and one for Block D.  These word docs have the novel titles and what novel each student has chosen.
  2. Read the first section of your novel that will be necessary for your first literature circle discussion.
  3. Determine what your role will be for next week’s first Discussion which will be on Thursday June 7th.  This is a discussion that has to take place with your group.  Please be mindful that not everyone has given me their choice of novel yet so more people may be added to your group…the word documents are ‘live’ so as I add student names when they give me their choices, all of you should be able to see these additions….

You can start to work on your role sheet for next week –or you can wait to work on this till next week…as long as it is done before your discussion.  In addition, if you cannot write or type on the document –you can write your role response on a separate document (office 365 word for example). In the past, I have also had some groups create a shared document where each role each member put their role onto the group document.

If I forgot anything, please let me know!

Poetry

Before Spring Break, we started to look at a few poems but we didn’t get too far into them on the last day of school.

Please review the “analyzing poetry” document below.  I would like you to do two things:

  1.  Analyze each of the two poems, The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost and If by Rudyard Kipling. Please upload each of these analysis to Teams.
  2. Please create a Venn Diagram comparing and contrasting these two poems.  You can also do this “Chart Format on Word” as it may be hard to upload a paper copy of a venn diagram to Teams.

Monday April 6th, 2020

Hey Everyone,

I hope this finds you all safe and healthy.  Please know I am thinking of you all!  We had our staff meeting today and I need to get some information from each of you…

1)  I would like each of you to email me at jenelson@sd43.bc.ca

In your email, I would like you to indicate whether you have:

a)  a device to work from (including tablets)

b) wifi

2)  In addition to the above email, I would like you to fill in the following form:

Yes, I know it is asking the same questions, but it is just to ensure that we are all connected and have the ability to work from our homes.  This is information that the school and district really needs…

Please send the email and complete the form TODAY.

3)  I would like each of you to go into your class “TEAMS”.  Last week I set up Teams and you would have received a notification that you were added to this team.

I would like EVERYONE to go into your class team and Post a Message…even if it is just to say “Hello”.

This is to ensure that each of you has access to Teams.  Please Post this message TODAY.

4) During our staff meeting, they also indicated that they want teachers to start this week….slow….so please be patient.  They want consistency across the district and while we may have everything in place at Riverside (for the most part!) this is not the case for every school or every family.

Your task for this week:  write a reflection on ONE of the following topics.  Please Complete this reflection by Thursday and upload (or copy/paste) this into assignments in “Teams”.

1) While we are all practicing social distancing due to Covid-19, what has inspired hope for you over the past few weeks?

2) While we are all practicing social distancing due to Covid-19, what self-discoveries have you learned about yourself?

3) While we are all practicing social distancing due to Covid-19, what have you found has given you peace and calm through all of this?

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns…I will be available on Teams tomorrow during your regularly scheduled class time if you want to post your question…

Keep safe and miss you all!

Sunday April 5th, 2020

Hey Everyone,

I hope this post finds you all doing well during these unprecedented times!  I’m still finding it hard to believe how much has changed over the past three weeks.  As much as I enjoyed my time on spring break, it feels weird not coming in to teach all of you!  I hope you have all been keeping safe and finding things to do at home.  Two of my kids have become nocturnal as I’m sure a lot of you have found you have slid into different sleep and eating routines!

As my email to all of you said, I will be posting a “shape of the week” (at least that is my plan) so that you can work with flexibility from your homes.  We have been told that grade 9-12’s should have “3 hours of work”….so I’m hoping that my plans fit into that …it may take some time trying to gauge it at first.

Tomorrow, teachers have a “virtual staff meeting” at 10am.  I will be posting my “shape of the week” some time tomorrow afternoon (Monday April 6th).  For this week, I am going to try “office hours” on Tuesday and Thursday.  This means that if you have any questions/concerns, you can reach me on Teams (on Tuesday and Thursday during your regularly scheduled class) by sending me a message/post. Please ensure that you can get into Teams and that you are on your class Team.  If not, please let me know.  I know this isn’t a forum we used before the break, but I think it will provide some great opportunities for collaboration and learning.

I hope this gives you all a little information…but most importantly I hope you are staying safe and healthy!

Ms. Nelson
