Good Morning!

-Poetry Terms Quiz

**Class Generated Essay Topics:  You can write on one of the topics below OR if you have a topic you would rather write on, please let me read through it before you begin…

1)In both Poems the authors talk about someone important in their life. Who has the advantage in the way that this person has influenced them?

2) Should both “If” and “The Road Not Taken” be taken as advice?

3) What life lessons or values have these poems taught you?

4)One poem is serious while the other is satiric…compare these two poems.

5) What is the significance in advice given by each poet and is one better than the other?

 

English 10: Wednesday October 28, 2015

Good Morning!

-Reminder that we have a Poetry Terms Quiz on Thursday October 29th (tomorrow)

-We have been working on our charts for “The Road Not Taken” and “If”.  Today we are going to complete the center column for compare/contrast.

-As a class, we will go over and share our ideas and fill in a class chart for compare/contrast.

-As a class, we will generate essay topics…first you will try to generate a topic on your own.  We will then share our ideas and narrow down our essay topics….

-You will be starting an essay outline for “The Road Not Taken” and “If”…this outline can be found in both the poetry and writing folder “Essay template for compare and contrast”

*For Homework:

-Study and prepare for your poetry terms quiz

-Complete the intro on the essay outline

 

English 10: Tuesday October 27th, 2015

Good Morning!

Yesterday we started a chart to help us analyze two poems “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost and “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

“The Road Not Taken” Compare/Contrast “If”

you will need 7 additional rows. Each row is going to represent a number on our “Analyzing Poetry” Sheet…which is numbered 1-7.  You will go through the analyzing poetry sheet doing the analysis for “The Road Not Taken”. Tomorrow we will read, discuss and analyze the poem “If” by Rudyard Kipling.

-Today we will read through, discuss and analyze “If” by Rudyard Kipling.  You will need to add “If’ to our charts going through “Analyzing poetry”.  Remember…Just like “The Road Not Taken” you will need to research the context behind the meaning of this poem…..

-once the two poems have been analyzed you will need to go through each category (1-7) looking for similarities and differences (compare/contrast…middle column).

-as a class we will generate essay topics.

English 10: Monday October 26th, 2015

Good Morning!

On Thursday , we left off with the class writing a “Love Poem”….the class generated both the ideas that makes a good love poem as well as the criteria for this poem.  It would be nice to hear some of these poems!

-We will look at a picture of two roads going into two different directions and first write our personal thoughts on the picture then discuss the possible meaning of the photo.

-Read aloud the poem “The Road Not Taken” …first write down your own personal thoughts on the poem, then we will share and discuss our thoughts on the poem.

-We will create a three column chart:

“The Road Not Taken” Compare/Contrast “If”

Good Morning!

-Yesterday we worked on “Casey at the Bat Meter and Scansion” there were some questions attached to this document that you needed to answer in response to the poem.  We also discussed Rhythm and Meter.  The additional resource you can look at is “Rhythm, Meter and Scansion” found in the poetry folder on Sharepoint.  Please do not stress if you do not immediately understand this concept…we will continue to work on this.  We will go over the questions at the start of class.

-Love Poems:  “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose”  we will read this aloud.  We will then brainstorm what makes a ‘love poem’.  We will generate a class definition of a love poem.

-Love Poem internet search:  find a famous love poem. Copy and paste to a ‘doc’.  How does this poem fit in to our definition of a love poem? Analysis of our love poem…

-writing our own “Love Poem”

Good Morning!

Yesterday we started the poem “Casey at the Bat” and watched the two cartoons attached to this poem.

-Today, we will open the document “Casey at the Bat with Meter and Scansion”.  We will go through this worksheet –and I will explain rhythm and meter.

“Rhythm and Meter“: This is an additional sheet to go through how to figure out iambic pentameter for example.

-Love Poems:  “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose”  we will read this aloud.  We will then brainstorm what makes a ‘love poem’.  We will generate a class definition of a love poem.

-Love Poem internet search:  find a famous love poem. Copy and paste to a ‘doc’.  How does this poem fit in to our definition of a love poem? Analysis of our love poem…

English 10: Monday October 19th, 2015

Good Morning!

On Friday, we worked on choosing an appropriate song that we could analyze.   We copy/pasted the song to a “doc” and on Friday and for weekend homework, you were to underline and identify the various devices within your song.

-Today we are going to read through “Analyzing Poetry” found on my sharepoint in the Poetry Folder.

-we are going to apply the steps in “Analyzing Poetry” to our own songs….remember that you will be posting your song/analysis to your Edublog.
