English 10: Friday October 16th, 2015

Good Morning!

*We may be able to go over the short story test that you all wrote on Wednesday…a few students may have to leave for a few minutes as they have not yet written the test….

English 10: Thursday October 14th, 2015

Good Morning!

-We are starting a new unit, Poetry.  We will go over the Poetry terms that you need to know for English 10.  This can be found on sharepoint in the Poetry folder.

English 10: Tuesday October 13th, 2015

Good Morning!

I hope you all had a good long weekend! On Friday we started a new short story “The Tell Tale Heart“, and we finished class by doing a peer edit of our  essays on “The Metaphor”.

*Your good copies of your essay are due today.  I would like you to post your good copy of your essay to your edublog.  In addition, I would like you to email your essay to me….I will give you a few minutes to clarify any questions and to post and will demonstrate how to post.  Please tag your post with “TheMetaphorNelsonA”

-Reminder:  Test tomorrow on Short stories:  Sam the Athlete, The Chaser, House, Forgiveness in Families, The Metaphor and The Tell Tale Heart.  Also know the prose fiction terms and your short story summaries.

-although we read “The Tell Tale Heart” on Friday, we did not have class time to work on a short story summary….we will do so today (approximately 15-20 minutes to work on and then we will go over so that you have this in preparation for your test.

English 10: Friday October 9th, 2015

Good Morning!

-Yesterday we worked on our essay outlines/drafts for “The Metaphor”. Your drafts should be complete for today so that we can peer edit.

-We are starting a new story today “The Tell Tale Heart”

*write down the elements that make a story spooky or scary (brainstorm)

*we will read the story aloud

*post writing (write your thoughts of the story/discuss)

*we watched (youtube) a version of the short story

-Peer Edit:  we matched up with partners to complete a peer edit.  In the writing folder there is a “peer edit review” that you can use as a guideline to help you look for items in your partners essay.

Reminders:  Essay is due on Tuesday October 13th, 2015

*Test is on Wednesday October 14th, 2015

Stories on the test:  Sam the Athlete, The Chaser, House, Forgiveness in Families, The Metaphor and The Tell Tale Heart.

*Also know the prose fiction terms, short story summaries and how to apply the terms to the stories.

*Format of Test:

Short Answers (terms)

Multiple choice (terms)

Character identification

Point of view (Name the story and point of view it is told in)

Quotes:  Name the quote and significance of the quote to the story

Sight story (a story you have not read before along with multiple choice and a paragraph.

English 10: Wednesday October 7th, 2015

Good Morning!

Yesterday we worked on our essay outlines and we were to complete up to the end of Body Parargaph #2 for homework….

run-ons and fragments: within the “writing” folder on sharepoint, there is another folder called “grammar”.  Open this folder.  There is a document called “fragments run-ons”.  We will work on the first 4 worksheets of this package.  My hopes is that you will be better able to identify fragments and run-ons withing your own writing…

-Go through a few examples of “Student Samples” of synthesis essays from the provincial exam.

Today, you will have time to work on your outline –to complete body paragraphs number 3 and your conclusion.

-From your outline, you will start to write your draft of your essay.

English 10: Tuesday October 6th, 2015

Good Morning!

Yesterday we worked on our “Venn Diagrams” for the short story “The Metaphor”. We also talked about unity and coherence in compare and contrast essays.  At the end of class we looked at semicolons (in the sharepoint writing folder) in the hopes that we will use semicolons in our upcoming essay.

*Semicolons:  yesterday you were working on semicolons (found in sharepoint in the writing folder) we will go over these today.

*We will start class by looking at “Compare and Contrast: Explanation and Examples” found in sharepoint in the writing folder.

*incorporating Quotes:  as we head into our essay, please review the proper way to incorporate a quote.  This is found in sharepoint in the writing folder.

* transitional expressions: as we head into our essay, please review the proper way to incorporate a quote.  This is found in sharepoint in the writing folder.

*compare and contrast essay outline:  You will have class time to work on getting your ideas down onto an outline.

 

***Head’s up for our short story unit test….it will most likely be next Tuesday or Wednesday (October 13/14th)
