Good Afternoon!

Today is our last day of Quarter 2!  If you have any work that is not yet handed in, you need to do so ASAP.  I will be doing report cards over the weekend….

*For the last three days we have been watching either celebrate and present your Inquiry projects.  Please remember to complete your Core Competency Reflection for this and to also tag it with NelsonQ2cc

*Mini Skits: you will be given a few different strips of paper in different colours:

1) On the blue strip, make up a fictional character.  Make sure to include aspects about the appearance as well as their personality

2)  On the pink strip of paper, write down an awkward or funny type of situation that people can get into.

3)  On the green strip of paper, write down a hope or dream that you or someone you may know want to accomplish.

*In groups of 3:  each group will receive a random strip of each colour.  You are to create a skit from the strips of paper…have fun!  Using the story map below will help guide you in your process….

*Head’s up:  Some of you have fallen behind and have not yet submitted your Wednesday Write Portfolio or Best Write.  You need to do so ASAP!!

*Postcard Activity:  you will receive a piece of paper to do this activity on…

  • Draw one event from your novel so far that has significance and impact to the theme and/or ending of your novel.
  • Write as the persona of one of the characters in your novel to another character in your novel describing this event.

-poetry terms (this should be review)

-rhythm and meter

-Poems: Because I Could Not Stop for Death, My Mistress’ Eyes, Shall I Compare Thee, I Hear America Singing, I Too Sing America, This is America, What Do I Remember of the Evacuation, Caged Bird, Walking on Both Sides of an Invisible Border.

-The test is a mix of  fill in the response, short answer, multiple choice, synthesis questions and a paragraph.

-There will be a ‘sight poem’ one that we have not studied in class.  This poem will have multiple choice questions and a paragraph response (so you may want to look at the paragraph writing template as a refresher…)

Poetry:

*Novels:  Connections –How do our novels connect to other literature we have read this quarter.  On an Orange piece of paper, write down the title of your novel on one half of the paper.  On the other half of the paper, write down some of the titles of other literature we have studied.  Draw a line connecting the novel title to each of the titles of the other literature.  On the line, write how the two pieces of literature are connected.

Literary Analysis: the novels are class are studying touch upon the themes of conflict and  identity.  Your task is to find quotes in your novel that demonstrate examples of these two themes.

Light Yellow Paper: 

1) put your novel title at the top

2) Find and write 5 quotes in your novel up to where you have read so far that pertain to the theme conflict.

3) Briefly write down the significance of this quote in relation to the book/theme.

Light Pink Paper:

1) put your novel title at the top

I would like you to create a 3-Way Venn Diagram for these three poems.  These will be done on paper and placed on the back bulletin board.  You can do these on your own or in a group of 2-3.

Novel Study:

*Thinking about our Novels

  1.  Blue Paper:  Write “I wonder” statements for your novels.  What are some ideas or messages that you wonder about from reading your novel?
  2. Pink Paper:  Write “I learned” statements.  What are some things…facts or otherwise about your novel, history or other that you have learned.
  3. Yellow Paper:  Write “I connected” statements.  What are some ways that you have connected the novel you are reading to your own life, other books/stories etc. you have read, or the world at large?
  4. Purple Paper:  Write the title of your novel down and a “Theme Statement” to represent your novel.
