Identity & Racism

Acknowledgment-Leah

silent reading

In this first unit, we are going to explore what terms like ‘Aboriginal’, ‘First Nations’, and ‘Indigenous’ mean, and how these terms have evolved over time. After looking at the language we use when talking about Indigenous peoples in Canada, we’ll examine common stereotypes about Indigenous people. Next, we’ll explore ideas around identity; specifically, the things that shape our own identities.

Why is this course so important?

  1. Practical Reasons: No matter what field you go into, Indigenous perspectives are becoming more and more important.
  2. Theoretical:  First Nations have been under represented in our school system, their texts and traditions were suppressed and whether we like to admit it or not, there still can be overt racism in Canada because of a lack of education and miseducation of all Canadians by the government. (Think of the Murray Sinclair quote I read yesterday).

*I would suggest you take notes on these videos, you will be using evidence to support your perspective.
