In an essay, you answer a question with a thesis, evidence, and a conclusion. In a Photo Essay, the same is achieved but instead of words, your evidence is shown through pictures. This means that you must select your photos carefully so that they send a clear message to your audience.

The essay question you’ll answer is:

While the the world was heading into WWII, what happened to Canada?

To structure your essay:

  1. Intro: End of WWI
  2. Body: Effects on people in Canada
  3. Body: Roaring 20s
  4. Body: Great Depression
  5. Body: Canada as events in Europe lead directly to WWII
  6. Conclusion: a lasting image of what will be the effects of all of the above (WWII image?)

Building your essay:

1. Use the internet to find photos of the Depression – American photos are OK but try to find Canadian
  • Great sites with hundreds of Canadian photos:

  • Make sure you try to find the best quality photos also

2. You may include a caption to make your photo clearer (if you don’t you must make sure that your purpose for choosing this photo is 100% clear to other people)

3. Give the photo title, date, author, and source
4. Organize your photos in any slideshow program, Powerpoint, even MS Word (but it’s a little harder to view the photos this way), Movie Maker, etc.
5. Email the link or file to Mr Chan with your name in the subject and the project name.

Presentation Very little effort resulting in a presentation that is difficult to understand. Purpose of the project is lost because of the presentation. Photos lack organization and presentation shows little forethought into what the audience may understand Clear, logical flow of photos. Organized, neat, appropriate amount of effort. Excellent effort in choosing precise photos. Presentation of photos leaves no room for misinterpretation or questions. Aesthetically pleasing. Audience empathizes with the images shown.
