First People’s Principles of Learning

Interconnectedness

Interconnectedness is everything connected to something. Interconnectedness happens with people and animals and plants. Everything that is interconnected can relate to something in a completely different way. Being interconnected in a friendship is important because you two can connect on another level. A friendship that has lasted a great amount of time builds a connection that doesn’t need to be verbal to know what the other person is feeling or thinking. If you don’t have an interconnection in a friendship then it’s not that good of a friendship if you two can only connect in one way. The same thing goes for people in relationships.

Interconnectedness relates to the work we’ve done in ecology with the food chain or the food pyramid or food web. One animal eats the produce and then another animal eats the animal with the product and so on. With the water cycle, carbon cycle, nitrogen cycle and phosphorus cycle, they all go through a process that has something to do with interconnectedness. In the carbon cycle, the body of the dead animal has to decompose and then it gets transferred into the atmosphere by cellular respiration and then there’s photosynthesis and the animals eat the plants. The whole process starts up again and continues on. Every cycle is interconnected in different ways.

Some specific examples of how our work is connected with interconnectedness is the different cycles and the food chain.

Sustainability

Sustainability is being able to maintain a certain amount of balance between everything in your life and finding a place in the middle so that everything is equal to you. Being able to find an equal state of balance for yourself with what you do. Being able to manage the amount of pollution you put into the environment and recycling as much as you can to help keep the environment proper.

Sustainability is related to a lot of things we’ve done this term. It has given us ways we can reduce the amount of pollution by taking more public transit, or making houses with more natural light to save energy, or use more solar panels to create energy. All of that helps the environment and if everyone does it, it can help to whole world. With water, we learned ways we could save our water and try to conserve the water we have by taking 5 minute showers instead of 10 minutes showers. Being smart with how we use our water so we don’t have water restrictions.

Specific examples of sustainability is global warming because of all the greenhouse gases, it’s trapping the heat from the sun and melting the icebergs and we’re slowly loosing fresh water.

  1. Form and Function: What are it’s main parts and what do the parts do? How does it use or generate electricity? How do electrons move through it?

For a lightning rod, the main parts is a pointed metal rod about an inch in diameter that’s connected to a piece of copper or aluminum which is connected to a conductive grid buried in the ground. Lightning rods don’t usually generate electricity but pass electrons to the ground. Electrons go through lightning rods because it’s the path with the least resistance to the ground. When the electrons reach the ground, they go into the conductive grid which spreads the electrons out.

2. What are the social implications? (How might people be affected?) Consider less developed countries and locations with different climates or geography.

Lightning rods affect people in a good way because this way the lightning strike the rod not the house so people won’t lose their house’s from a fire or getting burned down. People want lightning rod’s to prevent that from happening. In less developed countries, they might not have enough money to buy lightning rods but they still want them. For the climate it all depends on where you are because in some places in the world, the climate is very different than others which have lots of lightning. So if you live in a country where there is not much lightning you won’t have nearly as much but you should still have a lightning rod. In countries where the chance of lightning is higher and have a greater risk of being struck in a house or building but don’t have the money to get a lightning rod have a better chance that their houses will burn down.

3. What are the ethical implications? (What is morally right or wrong?)

A lightning rod is morally right because it prevents people from getting electrocuted and their houses being burnt down from the strike of lightning. Lightning rods help people keep their houses from being struck because the lightning goes straight to the lightning rods which is much safer.

4. What are the environmental implications? (How does it affect the natural world?)

When lightning hit’s the rod, the electrons safely get passed through going into the ground without any harm. The lightning rod prevents people from getting hurt and the electrons get spread throughout the ground becoming harmless.

I think that my partner and I worked really well together and we were on the same page the whole time. We worked on the whole project together, evenly splitting up the work for our model and the questions. I feel that we both had the same idea for making our model and we both supplied the materials to make our house. For the questions, we both did plenty of research for each question and taking our time to reflect on the questions and if it made sense. From the beginning of the project to the end, we used our time wisely in class as much as we could so we could as much time at the end to go over and add some finishing touches. The whole project turned out just like we had planned at the start.
