How does racism affect our society?

In the the poem “What Do You Remember Of The Evacuation?” by Joy Kogawa, the author is evacuated from her home because of her race. As a child, dealing with racism can be difficult and hard to understand and Joy would “pray to the God who loves/all the children in his sight/that I might be white,” (line 37) because she is ashamed to be Japanese and feels excluded from the rest of society; she feels as if she doesn’t belong. Also, “Tim flew the Union Jack/when the war was over but Lorraine/and her friends spat on us anyways,” (line 34) shows that in our society even when someone is trying to make peace and bring together out society, racism will overpower and divide it. Rasicm makes one feel excluded, ashamed and it divides our society.
