This course is about welcoming you into an amazing family-like community that will support you throughout secondary school. You will build lasting friendships and share life changing adventures creating cherished memories that will be with you all your life. The course is specifically intended for students who have previously taken an introductory Band course. The course will involve helpful mentored. Participating in all performances through the year is part of the course expectations in preparation for future band trips and festivals. Fasten your seatbelts for an amazing experience.

This course will be a continuation of Concert Choir 9, with increased emphasis on community. There will be wonderful performances and the development of musical skills in group and solo activities. You will continue to shine like stars as you amaze audiences, leaning on one another. If you want to be mentor and lead, this is the course for you! Plus, you are able to springboard in the elite Vocal Jazz course that continues your exciting and amazing musical journey.

Concert Choir 12 students will be polishing their skills in vocal production. This is the height of your music experience at Riverside as you take on a leadership role in the choral program through sharing skills and knowledge with others. Riverside Music Department is proud to offer a unique opportunity that introduces students to the skills and techniques of guitar bass. No previous experience necessary. This beginner level course will teach students basic playing technique, how to read music and performance skills developed from the elements of music. Students will be exposed to a variety of styles of music. Field trips and virtual interactions with professional musicians will be course highlights. Having your own instrument is NOT required for this course. Guitars are provided for in-class use only.

Riverside Music Department is proud to offer this introductory course to learn a band instrument. It will introduce you to this large and fun community at the school where we support and mentor you through your amazing and life-changing musical journey. No music experience is necessary. Students should rent or purchase an instrument AFTER we have explored all the instruments in class. Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for this great adventure. Take the risk and join the community!

Jazz Band and Strings is a course for students wanting to learn a new style of music, adding to the skills they achieve in Concert Band. Jazz band and Strings will practice on different days. Jazz band is open to all instruments from piano and guitar to wind and percussion instruments. Students will study a variety of jazz genres and develop jazz soloing/improvisation techniques. Strings are open to any level of string players (Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass).  It is highly recommended student be enrolled in Concert Band as well if they are joining Jazz Band or Strings.  Off timetable.

In this busy course, student performers will face the creative challenges of acting, singing and dancing to tell a story or to honour a character’s experience. Students will audition, rehearse, and perform in a production at Riverside’s River’s Edge Theatre. There are no “cuts”, and there are no “small parts” in this ensemble. Student success depends on commitment and enthusiasm regardless of experience or casting. Students are expected to support a safe environment of creative risk. Please note: Some after-school rehearsals are required, and an intense schedule leading up to shows can be expected. (Singing masks and a base costume will be required for purchase.)

Concert Band 12 is the crescendo of Riverside’s community experience with students reaching their peak in music performance and leadership. The trip will be jaw-dropping and the fun will be contagious as we all celebrate the power and life-changing world of music. This course is a continuation of Beginning Guitar. Students must have taken a beginning Guitar or Guitar lessons in the past. Students will be learning more advanced music and Guitar techniques. Students will be expected to work on solo, large and small ensemble pieces. If you play the drums, please join us. There will be many opportunities to Jam.

Vocal Jazz classes are intended to provide an opportunity for students to explore another musical idiom adding to the skills they achieve in Concert Choir. This course is for the advanced singer who wants the challenge of a more difficult vocal repertoire. Grade 12 students will have first dibs in solos. This course will continue to work on vocal technique, jazz styles and improvisation. Students in this course must also be enrolled in Concert Choir.
