Riverside Music Department is proud to offer a unique opportunity that introduces students to the skills and techniques of guitar. No previous experience necessary. This beginner level course will teach students basic playing technique, how to read music and performance skills developed from the elements of music. Students will be exposed to a variety of styles of music. Having your own instrument is NOT required for this course. Guitars are provided for in-class use only.

This course is about welcoming you into an amazing family-like community that will support you throughout secondary school. Jazz Band is a course for students wanting to learn a new style of music, adding to the skills they acquire in Concert Band. Jazz band is open to all instruments from piano and guitar to wind and percussion instruments. Students will study a variety of jazz genres and develop jazz soloing/improvisation techniques. It is highly recommended student be enrolled in Concert Band as well if they are joining Jazz Band or Strings. Jazz Band and strings will practice on different days. Off timetable.

Strings is a course for students wanting to learn a new style of music, adding to the skills they acquire in Concert Band. Strings is open to any level of strings players (Violin, Viola, Cella, Bass). It is highly recommended student be enrolled in Concert Band as well if they are joining Strings. Jazz Band and Strings will practice on different days. Off timetable.

Rock Band teaches students to perform the music they know and love, and to compose and improvise in a collaborative setting. Styles that are studied include Rock, Pop, Reggae, Hip Hop, Rhythm & Blues, Indie, and other contemporary styles as they emerge. The course will foster peer-to-peer development in the band setting, while encouraging the band to perform cohesively as a single unit. Students in Rock Band will also be introduced to the art of songwriting, both individually and collaboratively. In this course, students will rehearse twice a week as a band. Students must practice their individual part on their own time. Students will gain experience in performing by playing an in-class recital and three Rock Band concerts through the school year. This is not a beginner class. Students must be proficient at any of the following instruments: electric guitar, electric bass, keyboards, drums, and /or vocals.

Vocal Jazz classes are intended to provide an opportunity for students to explore another musical idiom adding to the skills they achieve in Concert Choir. This course is for the advanced singer who wants the challenge of a more difficult vocal repertoire. Grade 12 students will have first dibs in solos. This course will continue to work on vocal technique, jazz styles and improvisation. Students in this course must also be enrolled in Concert Choir.
