HONOURS COURSES FOR GRADE 9 STUDENTS

Grade 8’s entering Grade 9 at Riverside have the option applying for one, two or all three of our honours Grade 9 classes: English, Math, and Science. We have a strict cap on the number students admitted to each section, and so there is a selection process including an application form and a test. This program provides extra challenge and depth over and above the regular curriculum. Please note: any student can apply to the Riverside honours classes and write the assessment, however, students out of Riverside’s catchment will not be processed for acceptance until their cross catchment application is approved.

SCIENCE 9 HONOURS

SCIENCE 9 HONOURS

*All grade 9 honours students will have written an entrance assessment in January. Successful candidates will be placed in the appropriate honours class by school Counsellors.

The Honours format offers students an opportunity to complete Science 10 in an enriched and varied setting. In this course, there will be opportunity for projects and activities that will focus on individualized learning and engagement. The typical student has a good understanding of learning and is becoming an independent learner able to function well at both individual and group work. Students may register in this course after Science 9 Honours or Science 9.

MATHEMATICS 9 HONOURS

FOUNDATION COURSE: MATHMEMATICS 8

*All grade 9 honours students will have written an entrance assessment in January. Successful candidates will be placed in the appropriate honours class by school Counsellors.

This is the first course of Riverside’s math honours program, which provides an opportunity for like-minded students to develop a community of peers and together nurture their passion, creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence in mathematics. There is an application process which includes an assessment. The Mathematics 9 curricular content will be covered in depth with basic concepts covered at an accelerated rate to allow more time for analyzing, evaluating, and applying knowledge. Learning activities will be structured to provide enrichment beyond the grade 9 curriculum with a focus on enhancing problem-solving and fostering higher levels of thinking. Enrichment may also be driven by the interests and passions of the students. Students are expected to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about enhancing their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as having a solid work ethic and an aptitude for math. Students should enjoy challenges and be comfortable with risk-taking. Students are expected to participate in math contests. The core and curricular competencies will be addressed throughout the course. Assessment is aligned with the BC Ministry of Education Grade 9 curricular outcomes and extensions. Students are expected to maintain a high standard of academic achievement. The option to purchase math workbook is available if students choose to write in it.

At the end of this course students will be prepared for FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS 10 HONOURS or FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS

ENGLISH 9 HONOURS

ENGLISH 9 HONOURS
COURSE CODE: MEN – – 09

This course is intended for students who demonstrate exceptional skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. This class is for the student who shows a keen interest and passion for English and the art of communication. The course emphasizes the development of academic writing, in-depth reading, and critical class discussions through an inquiry process. The discovery of thematic connections across genres is emphasized. As this class will be at an accelerated pace, students should be self- motivated and responsible learners. Opportunities for writing to a wider audience will be offered through blogging and self-publishing. There is an application process for this class, including an assessment.

This is the second course of Riverside’s math honors program, which provides an opportunity for like-minded students to develop a community of peers and together nurture their passion, creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence in mathematics. This course can be entered from Math 9 Honours or if space is available from Math 9 with a teacher recommendation.  The Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 curricular content will be covered in depth with basic concepts covered at an accelerated rate to allow more time for analyzing, evaluating, and applying knowledge. Building on the English 10 Literary and Composition course, Honours is intended for students who wish to further their understanding of literature, media, spoken word and composition. This class is for the students who show a keen interest and passion for English and the art of communication. Students who prefer an accelerated pace in a challenging, supportive, and engaging environment will appreciate this class. This course emphasizes the development of students’ skills in academic writing and requires students to read widely and participate actively in class discussions. Candidates will be considered based on the application form, teacher feedback, and grades.

This course is continuation of Riversides Math 9 & 10 Honours program, which provides opportunities for students to strengthen their relationship with like-minded peers and together nurture their passion, creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence in mathematics. It is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into postsecondary programs such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Business. This course can be entered from Math 10 Honours or if space is available from Math 10 with a teacher recommendation. The Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 11 curricular content will be covered in depth with basic concepts covered at an accelerated rate to allow more time for analyzing, evaluating, and applying knowledge. Learning activities will be structured to provide enrichment beyond the grade 11 curriculum with a focus on enhancing problem-solving and fostering higher levels of thinking. Enrichment may also be driven by the interests and passions of the students. Students are expected to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about enhancing their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as having a solid work ethic and an aptitude for math. Building on all English 10 courses, Honours is intended for students who prefer an accelerated pace in a challenging and engaging environment. Students will further their understanding of Indigenous literature, media, spoken word and composition and deepen their knowledge of First Nations Principles of Learning and cultural identity. Through the Indigenous lens, students will explore a variety of literary forms and genres to gain insight into key aspects of Canada’s past, present, and future. This course will explore personal and cultural identities, histories, oral stories and connections to land and place. Students will leave the course with an understanding that self-representation through authentic First Peoples’ text is a means to foster justice and plays a role within the process of Reconciliation. This course will broaden their understanding of themselves and the world they live in. Students will also enhance their ability to write for specific audiences and disciplines through narrative, expository, descriptive, persuasive and opinion pieces. Students will also learn how to cite sources, consider the credibility of evidence, and evaluate the quality and reliability of the source. Candidates are considered based on the application form, teacher feedback, and marks.
