Part 1: Mutation Story
Hi, I’m a gene in a person called Bob. Bob has a syndrome called Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome. Bob’s syndrome was not inherited by anyone. The syndrome occurs when a bit of genetic material gets deleted in chromosome 4 while the cells are still in early development. Bob’s deletion is a larger deletion than usual. This is a completely random event, and could happen to anyone, although the chances are very small and only happen to 1 in 50,000 people. People with Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome have a different facial appearance than other people, and they also have delayed growth and development, and sometimes have seizures. Bob is very lucky to survive with a big deletion like that, but will have to live like this for the rest of their life.
Part 2: The Making of Mutation Story
#1. What questions did you need to research in order to create your mutation story
I searched up “Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome” and “How Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome is caused.”
#2. What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?
I used my computer to type the story and google to research.
#3. What was the process you used to investigate the topic?
I looked at what caused the genetic mutation, how it happened, and what it was, then I started writing down the paragraph & a story to go with it.
#4. How did you verify and cite the info you found?
The website I was on was https://ghr.nlm.nih.gov/condition/wolf-hirschhorn-syndrome#synonyms and it was reliable because it has a “Contact us” page and it lists its references.
#5. How did the process of completing this challenge go and what could you have done better?
The project was easy, but there were some websites where I could not understand what they were trying to say. To do better on this project, I could have made a more creative story.
