I bisque fired my floral palette this week and began my paper mâché project. I decided to make my chimera’s theme – deer. For now, I’ve used newspaper to make four balls and finish the first layer. Next week, I hope to complete the second layer of my chimera and add another layer of underglaze to my palette.

                        Week 8, 06/04/2023

I’ve applied the final coat on my cereal bowl, and I’m halfway done painting the sculpture for my project about life underwater. Before applying overglaze and firing the cereal bowl the next week, I’m waiting for it to be bisque fired for the final time. My aim for the following week is to complete my whale sculpture.

Week 7, 30/03/2023, Life Below Water – Whale

I applied the second layer and bisque fired my cereal bowl this week. I had previously broken my whale sculpture, but I had put it back together and had begun painting it. I’ll aim to finish painting my whale sculpture and add a third layer of underglaze on my cereal dish the following weeks.

Week 6, 09/03/2023, Inquiry Project – cereal bowl

I finished off my whale and started painting my bowl this week. I was waiting the whale to be fire so this week I have been focusing on my bowl. This week’s accomplishment was finish painting the first layer and fire it. After the break, I will apply 2 more layers of underglaze and one layer of overglaze.

Week 5, 02/03/2023, Life Below Water – Whale

This week, I finished the sculpture for my life below water project. I’m waiting for it to dry before I start carving and firing it next week. I was confused about how to create such a big sculpture at first but eventually figured a way to do it after asking my teacher. This week’s accomplishment was removing the newspaper from the whale and reassembling it. Next week, my goal is to finish painting the bowl or palette that I made.

Week 4, 23/02/2023, Rainbowl Bowl

This week, I created the base for my bowl. I am waiting for it to dry so that I can take it off the mold and fire it next week. I struggled to create a bowl using the pottery wheel so I came up with another method to create the bowl. My success this week was finishing the bowl, and my goal for next week is to start painting on the palette I created last week.

Week 3, 16/02/2023, Floral Palette

I started working on my floral palette for acrylic paint this week. I made a clay base and am waiting for it to dry so that I can fire it next week. I struggled at first to get the correct size paint holder, but everything worked out perfectly. My success this week was finishing the palette, and my goal for next week is to finish painting it.

Inquiry Project

What would you like to investigate/make as a term-long project?

My long term project is to create 2 different objects that I want to create, as shown in my reference pictures below. For now, I am creating a palette and am planning to make a cereal bowl.

What do you need to get started?
I enjoy decorating my room and cooking, so the goal of my project is to express my creativity through room decoration and ceramic tableware. To get started, I need to come up with designs and sketches. I will also need to watch some tutorial videos to learn how to make those objects. I need to do some research on my third object because I have yet to decide what it will be.
How will you begin the project?

Using a pottery wheel to create the cereal bowl could be one of the challenges I face in completing my project. Despite having some experience with the pottery wheel, I believe I have a lot of room to improve my pottery skills. My other challenge may be time; I started this class later than others, so I have to utilize my time really well.
