Desmos Art Functions Card 2022

(1) How you figured out what equations to use?

Going through the book helped me figure out which equations to use. I entered various equations I discovered to see which shape/graph would fit the shape of my image. For some equations, such as tilt ellipse, I did a google search and adjusted the equation to fit my image.

(2) Did you have any challenges?

I struggled a lot to find equations that I could use for my image because I want to include as many different equations as possible. Also, while I hope to make my equations more creative, the majority of the shapes that comprise my character are circles. Because the shapes are similar, I spend a lot of time trying to find different formulas. For example, used two different types of formulas to different create tilt ellipses’ equations.

(3) Any aha moments?

My “aha” moment was when I finally figured out how to colour in the demos. Before watching the video, I assumed that I could only create restrictions using x and y (like 2<x<7), I didn’t realize how much naming equations help. I thought it would be difficult to create an empty space inside a coloured shape, but it turned out that everything was simple because I had already named all of my equations at the start. It surprised me how simple coloring is compared to what I had anticipated, and I felt proud of myself for learning something new.

(4) Did you get help?

For most of my questions, I could find the answers online or in my textbook. However, I was puzzled as to how and why we needed to name our equation, which was resolved after I sought assistance from my peers.

(5) Did you use any strategies?

One of my strategies was to combine restrictions when colouring, which I can colour a larger area of the image (example below). This way I find easier when compare to using simple restriction and only colour a small area of the image. Another strategy I discovered was that when adding color to your image, you can simply use the RGB color model rather than the method taught in the coloring video. As a Mac-book user, this method is much easier for me because all I need to enter is f=rgb (the code) and I can find the correct colour.

(6) How did this assignment help you understand more about transformations of functions and relations?

This assignment helped me become more familiar with the names and properties of various functions. Even with complicated equations, I learned how to apply transition, transformation, and reflection. It also refreshes my memory of what I’ve learned in Pre-Calculus 12, especially when I didn’t do any math during the winter break. I had forgotten that I could create a linear line using an absolute value function rather than just a normal linear function, but this project reminded me of this. Overall, I learned a lot and gained a better understanding of function and relation transformations after completing this project.
