COURSE CODE: MFOM-11

FOUNDATION COURSE: FOUNDATIONS of MATHEMATICS 10 and PRE-CALCULUS 10

This course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for post-secondary studies in programs that do not require the study of theoretical calculus. This might include the Humanities, Fine Arts, some Trades and Technical programs. The course will include inductive and deductive reasoning, angle relationships, graphical analysis of linear and quadratic functions and systems, trigonometry of right and oblique triangles, optimizations, statistics, financial literacy including investments, loans, credit cards and mortgages. The core and curricular competencies will be addressed throughout the course. The option to purchase math workbook is available if students choose to write in it.

At the end of this course, students are prepared for Foundations 12.

PRE-CALCULUS 11

PRECALCULUS 11
COURSE CODE: MPREC11

FOUNDATION COURSE: FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS 10

This course is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into post secondary programs that require the study of theoretical calculus. This might include Mathematics, Sciences, Engineering and Commerce. The course will include roots and powers, radical operations, quadratic functions and equations, rational expressions and equations, oblique triangle trigonometry, financial literacy involving investments, compound interest, loans, credit cards and mortgages. The core and curricular competencies will be addressed throughout the course.   The option to purchase math workbook is available if students choose to write in it.

At the end of this course students are prepared for Precalculus 12 or Foundations of Mathematics 12

PRE-CALCULUS 11 HONOURS

PRE-CALCULUS 11 HONOURS
COURSE CODE: MPREC11

FOUNDATION COURSE: FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS and PRECALCULUS 10 HONORS OR FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS with teacher recommendation.

*Students interested in continuing in an honours program must fill in an application. When selecting courses, please select the non-honours version of the course. i.e Pre-Calculus 11.  Successful applicants for the honours program will be scheduled appropriately by their counsellor.

This course is continuation of Riversides Math 9 & 10 Honours program, which provides opportunities for students to strengthen their relationship with like-minded peers and together nurture their passion, creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence in mathematics. It is designed to provide students with the mathematical understandings and critical-thinking skills identified for entry into postsecondary programs such as Mathematics, Science, Engineering and Business. This course can be entered from Math 10 Honours or if space is available from Math 10 with a teacher recommendation. The Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 11 curricular content will be covered in depth with basic concepts covered at an accelerated rate to allow more time for analyzing, evaluating, and applying knowledge. Learning activities will be structured to provide enrichment beyond the grade 11 curriculum with a focus on enhancing problem-solving and fostering higher levels of thinking. Enrichment may also be driven by the interests and passions of the students. Students are expected to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about enhancing their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as having a solid work ethic and an aptitude for math. Students should enjoy challenges and be comfortable with risk-taking. Students are expected to participate in math contests. The core and curricular competencies will be addressed throughout the course. Assessment is aligned with the BC Ministry of Education Pre-Calculus 11 curricular outcomes and extensions and core competencies. Students are expected to maintain a high standard of academic achievement.
