FOUNDATION COURSE: MATHEMATICS 8

This Mathematics program of study is designed to develop deep mathematical understanding and fluency, logical reasoning, analytical thought, and creative thinking. Topics include operations with rational numbers and exponents, polynomials and algebra, linear relations, scale diagrams, probability, statistics, and financial literacy. The core and curricular competencies will be addressed throughout the course. The option to purchase math workbook is available if students choose to write in it.

At the end of this course, students will be prepared for Foundations of Mathematics and Pre-Calculus 10 or Workplace Mathematics 10.

FOUNDATION COURSE: MATHEMATICS 8

Students will be placed in this course on the advice of the Counsellor and Mathematics teacher. Only students who have a history of difficulty in mathematics will be placed in this course. Students whose lack of success is due to poor work habits will not be placed in this course. The content is less demanding than Mathematics 9 and content will be adjusted to meet the abilities and needs of individual students. Calculators will be used to develop concepts and aid in computations. Math 9 Adapted students are currently integrated within the regular Mathematics 9 classroom. Being placed in this course could have implications for post-secondary options. The option to purchase math workbook is available if students choose to write in it.

At the end of this course, students will be prepared for Workplace Mathematics 10.

*All grade 9 honours students will have written an entrance assessment in January. Successful candidates will be placed in the appropriate honours class by school Counsellors.

This is the first course of Riverside’s math honours program, which provides an opportunity for like-minded students to develop a community of peers and together nurture their passion, creativity, enthusiasm, and confidence in mathematics. There is an application process which includes an assessment. The Mathematics 9 curricular content will be covered in depth with basic concepts covered at an accelerated rate to allow more time for analyzing, evaluating, and applying knowledge. Learning activities will be structured to provide enrichment beyond the grade 9 curriculum with a focus on enhancing problem-solving and fostering higher levels of thinking. Enrichment may also be driven by the interests and passions of the students. Students are expected to be self-motivated and enthusiastic about enhancing their creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as having a solid work ethic and an aptitude for math. Students should enjoy challenges and be comfortable with risk-taking. Students are expected to participate in math contests. The core and curricular competencies will be addressed throughout the course. Assessment is aligned with the BC Ministry of Education Grade 9 curricular outcomes and extensions. Students are expected to maintain a high standard of academic achievement. The option to purchase math workbook is available if students choose to write in it.

At the end of this course students will be prepared for FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS 10 HONOURS or FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS AND PRECALCULUS

MATHEMATICS 9 SUPPORT

*This course is be offered in Period 0 (outside of the timetable).

Taken concurrently with Math 9, this course is intended for students who have been assigned to grade 9 but were not successful in or only marginally passed Mathematics 8. The intent of the course is to provide extra support so that students can be successful in the regular Math 9 program. The course will be offered in period 0 every school day with an 8 am start time. The course will include pre-teaching of concepts, re-teaching of concepts and using alternate strategies to reinforce concepts. Time will also be devoted to improving organizational skills, study skills, and homework assistance.
