Your digital footprint will almost definitely affect your future opportunities. For example, if you posted a photo of you doing something illegal, like underage drinking or use of drugs, then you might not get that job you wanted. It is becoming more and more common for employers to check possible employees social medias/ search them up online before giving them the job, and some people are losing job opportunities because of what they post online.You could have a scholarship to a university, but then it could be taken away because of a picture posted online of you doing something illegal. Your digital footprint can make or break your future, it is essential that you have a positive digital footprint if you want to go far in life.
Here are three strategies you can use to keep your digital footprint appropriate and safe:
- Before you post anything online, ask yourself these questions: will you regret it later? Is it true? Is it helpful? Is it inspiring? Is it necessary? Is it kind?
- Post Inspiring, helpful quality content online, It could help you help you get into a good school / job.
- Before you are going to post something online, think: would you want your parents or grandparents to see it? Would you want your employer or teacher to see it? If not then do not post it online!
I have learned a lot about digital footprints and how to get a positive digital footprint. I hope to pass on my knowledge now for the benefit of other students. I learned that one mistaken post can set you up for life, and that a good digital footprint could help you in the future. I would tell these 
students by explaining to them but adding in examples of other people’s stories, because in my opinion that helps you realise that it really can happen to someone, and people aren’t just telling you stuff.
