This course is designed for students who have successfully completed ELL Beginner and have a first language other than English. This course is designed to familiarize students in the curricular competencies of expressive (speaking/writing) and receptive (reading/listening) language. This course introduces learning strategies and genre with an emphasis on Canadian culture and in particular explores the ideas within the home, school, and community. This course cannot be taken concurrently with Literary Studies/Composition, Social Studies or Career and Life Education.

This course is designed for English Language Learners at level 2/3. The course develops student’s English speaking, listening, reading, and writing competencies by introducing them to a variety of texts, genres, forms and styles. In addition, it will build background knowledge for future Social Studies and English classes. This course cannot be taken concurrently with Literary Studies/Composition and/or Social Studies.

This course is for students who have successfully completed Academic Strategies 10 and have a first language other than English.  This course is designed to extend the students‘ exploration of the English language skills of reading listening, speaking and viewing, with a particular emphasis on intercultural competency, academic vocabulary, genre, and written expression.  This course cannot be taken concurrently with Literary Studies/Composition and/or Social Studies. This is the exit course of the EAL program.

English 12 First Peoples is a University approved academic English course which can be taken in place of English 12. English 12 First Peoples is an interactive and engaging course with an emphasis on writing, both in expository and creative forms, and on the study of First Nations literature. There is a strong emphasis on the development of writing skills. Through various literary forms and genres, students will examine how language shapes ideas and influences others from various global, First Peoples or Canadian perspectives. The various literary forms will help student begin to question what they hear, read, view and analyze texts, which will enhance their ability to be educated and engaged citizens. Students will leave this course with the ability to respond to text through oral or written form in a personal, creative, reflective or critical manner.

Creative Writing 12 is all about discovering your voice and exploring the power of storytelling. You’ll read and experiment with a wide mix of genres, from fantasy and science fiction to memoir, literary fiction, and blended styles. Along the way, you’ll see how writers from global, First Peoples, and Canadian backgrounds use language to shape worlds, express identity, and share lived experiences. You’ll also get a behind-the-scenes look at how publishing works, from first draft to final piece, and explore how your own life, interests, and questions can inspire meaningful creative work. Whether you’re building a fictional universe, writing personal narratives, or trying out new forms, you’ll develop the skills to express yourself clearly, creatively, and confidently. By the end of the course, you’ll have a stronger sense of your voice and the tools to tell the stories that matter to you. Note: This course can be used towards your grade 12 courses for postsecondary BUT it does NOT replace English 12 or English First Peoples 12.
