On a regular day we have many interactions with the environment, although we never put the time to think about it and understand the positive and negative consequences that our interactions have on the environment. In this assignment we are supposed to write down a few interactions that we have on a regular day and their consequences to the environment. Here as a few of my interactions which I have reflected on and thought about.


Automobile travel:

Automobile travel is the first one. When I go to school and come back home I need my parents to drive me. However I really didn’t take the time to think about the consequences that my action engraves on the environment until now. The consequences that cars can create are devastating. Cars let harmful gases, CO2, etc…which pollutes the air and also creates global warming and climate change. Global Warming is when the total temperature of the earth rises quickly melting glaciers and icebergs in Antarctica and other cold areas. The harmful gases an Co2 is locked in the atmosphere and that is what causes the rising of temperature. It also affects the biosphere (humans, plants and animals) by causing dangerous diseases and also reduces the growth of plants and trees. I never really thought about this but our cars need gas and to get gas they need to create pipelines which can leak into lakes and other places where marine animals live. But the reason I do this is because I carry a lot of things to take home and to school and also from school to my house there is a lot of uphill and downhill the weather is also a problem sometimes. My plan is to walk to school and home after the weather becomes better (spring). We can reduce air pollution by using public transportation, planting more trees (they take in CO2 and let out oxygen), walking, etc…


Leaving the tap running:

When I wash the dishes or brush my teeth I usually leave the tap running (by accident). I seem to forget the consequences that my action has on the environment and the hydrosphere. Water is very valuable and something that not every country has access to, so we need to be extra careful and keep the hydrosphere safe and be aware of what we do.  During the summer the City of Port Coquitlam usually tells residents to use less water and only allowing to water plants on certain days and requesting to not wash your cars too much. When I searched online to find out why they are doing this, I found out that we need to conserve water because the population is growing and the environment is changing. As well as leaving water for public health and environmental sustainability. From now on I will try to remember to not leave the tap open. Another great thing to do is when you’re washing your plants or vegetables put a container in the sink so the water that is used goes into the container and once it’s full you could water your plants (that way water isn’t wasted).

Usage of plastic bags.:

Regularly we all use plastic bags when we go shopping (including me). However it has become a habit and sometimes forget to bring along reusable bags with us but we also seem to forget the consequences of our actions. Plastic bags are very useful when shopping or just everyday use. Although many plastic bags are made from crude oil and natural gas and during the creation of the plastic the factories pollute the air and the atmosphere.  Last year in a documentary that we watched in school it showed that a lot of plastics are non-biodegradable and because landfills and the geosphere are overflowing so they are throwing plastic and garbage in the oceans and in the hydrosphere which pollutes the waters and also kill many marine animals and their ecosytems. I had a Visual Journal that we would reflect on and one of my reflections were on plastic use but unfortunately I have lost it and I am not sure where it is.  Many stores are charging a fee for plastic bags but that still isn’t stopping people from using plastic bags. From now on whenever we go shopping I will try to remember to bring reusable bags to reduce pollution in the air.

For the past month and a half we have been working on a project called Engineering Brightness. Our class has been divided into groups and each group has been working very hard on raising awareness and responding to light poverty in various ways.

My group has been collaborating with Pitt River Middle School to help us fundraise in their school. The Pitt River Leadership team was very enthusiastic and passionate about this project and they really did want to make a change. We had two meetings (one meeting before winter break and one after winter break) with them so far to discuss what they want to do for fundraisers and we also talked about how we need to raise awareness around the community and not just one school. In this time we mostly have been planning. They said that they are having a bake sale on the week that semester two starts. We also are planning to go with Pitt River to school visits were they go to different schools in the community for their leadership program but they also asked us to come with them and talk about light poverty and Engineering Brightness, although they’re not sure of a date yet since not many schools have responded yet. Although we know what school to go to when the date it known. We did make posters for the Bake Sale in Pitt River and also made a PowerPoint to introduce light poverty to people that don’t know what it is and what they can do. This will also be the presentation that we will present at the school visits when the date is organized. When we go to the schools we are pretty much just going to talk about the light poverty in the Dominican Republic and what they can do about it. We also contacted the Eddy and our friend that is in the Eddy, interviewed us and spread the word throughout the school.

This project has helped us get better with our presentation and communication skills. It also helped us with critical thinking. Collaboration was key because if we never connected with Pitt River we probably wouldn’t be here. This also showed that it’s better to come together as a community and try to solve a problem where the results would be better than doing something alone. This did have us go out of our comfort zone and do big things in the community where we never really had done. Most of this time we have been panning out possible things we can do. We haven’t really got any money but we are still in the process of fundraising and raising the awareness. Pitt River is excited and this may be something that they would probably wanting to continue throughout the year. We have achieved most of our goals as far as raising awareness and collaborating with other school. However the raising money part is still going on and we also will reach that goal soon.

Throughout this project, we figured that the more that we spread the word around the community the better. In my opinion I think that collaborating with Pitt River was a very smart thing to do and it was something that nobody else in the class did. When we introduced this idea to Pitt River the were very excited and enthusiastic about it. In my opinion,  I think that we worked well in our group and that each of us helped each other to get this far. We could have improved on raising more money and planning more fundraisers but we didn’t have a lot of time to do everything. However we are still fundraising to cover the costs of the materials that is needed for the lights. Over all I think that we did an amazing job in this project. We did our best and did what we can to get the word out in the community. I am very proud with what we did in this period of time and I think that we did make a difference. This experience has been one of a kind and something I have never done. I am very happy because our class actually made and did things and had the chance to connect with other people in different schools on the other side of the earth. We are very fortunate to do something like this since many other science classes don’t do these type of projects. I believe that learning is not only what we do in school but take that and incorporate it in the real world.

The Cell Cycle:

The cell cycle is what cells go through in order to create more cells. The cell cycle has 3 stages which are interphase, mitosis and cytokinesis.


This is the first and the longest stage in the cell cycle. In this stage the cell grows in size and replicates DNA.


Mitosis is the second stage in the cell cycle where all the contents of the cells nucleus duplicate. Mitosis has four phases which are prophase, anaphase, metaphase and telophase (PMAT is a way to remember it). During prophase the nuclear membrane and the nucleolus disappears and the chromosomes join together into sister chromatids (joined by a centromere). In metaphase the sister chromatids line up the equator of the cell. In anaphase the spindle fibres pull the chromosomes to opposite ends of the poles. And the last step of Mitosis is when everything is replicated and is ready to become into two cells.


The cell divides into to two separate cells with the same exact DNA.


Meiosis is pretty much the same thing as Mitosis but it is PMAT x2 as well as this needs two parents unlike mitosis which needs one. Instead of making regular skin cells the process of Meiosis creates sperm and egg cells. The other difference is that in when a cell goes through mitosis it creates two cells by the end of Cytokinesis but in Meiosis it creates four sperm cells in the males body and one out of the four cells become an egg cell in a female, the other three are polar bodies and aren’t much of use. Just like mitosis, meiosis also has interphase. During interphase each of the homologous pair of chromosomes is replicated. Homologous meaning that they are matching chromosomes one from each set (mother and father). During the first round of PMAT which I will refer to as Meiosis 1, and then the homologous chromosomes separate into two cells . Then in Meiosis 2, the chromosomes don’t replicate but the sister chromatids end up separating and creating four cells. And in each cell that is created there is only 23 chromosomes.


Sexual Reproduction:

Sexual reproduction is when the sperm and the egg cell come together and the from a new organism such as a baby. There are three steps in sexual reproduction which are mating, fertilization and development. Mating is when gametes also known as sex cells come together at the same time at the same place. there are two ways of fertilization which are external and internal fertilization. Internal fertilization is when the sperm cell meets an egg cell inside the females body. Pollination is basically internal fertilization but for plants. Pollen is yellow and powdery and carries the plant male gamete to the female reproductive system and then the pollen tube transports the sperm cell to the egg cell. After that fertilization occurs and the zygote grows into an embryo and nourished with the food that exists in the seed.  External fertilization is when the sperm and the egg cell meet outside the body of the parents. External fertilization mostly occurs in underwater species. The results of fertilization whether it’s internal or external, a zygote is created and contains 23 chromosomes from the mother and 23 chromosomes from the father. A zygote then goes thorough mitosis  and cell division then and becomes an embryo. However for a zygote to go through cell division the following conditions nee to be met which are; there must be enough nutrients for the embryo is divide, the temperature has to be warm enough so the enzymes and proteins can function properly when they go through chemical reactions, there must a certain amount of moisture in the embryo so that it doesn’t dry out and lastly the embryo needs to be protected from ultraviolet radiation as well as predators. Embryonic development is the early development in their offspring and occurs after the first two months after fertilization. Then there is fetal development where there is three trimesters and each trimester is 3 months long. During the first trimester, the organs, the brain and the spinal cord develop and the embryo is then called a fetus. The second trimester the mother can feel the baby moving and weighs 650 grams. In the third trimester the fetus grows and prepares for birth, major growth in the brain and fat is produces under the skin of the fetus.

Asexual Reproduction:

Many organism naturally form clones through asexual reproduction. A clone is an identical genetic copy of its parent. Cloning is also used agriculture and research to copy desired organisms, tissue, and genes. In asexual reproduction there is only one parent needed. There are many types of asexual reproduction such as binary fission, budding, fragmentation, vegetative reproduction and spore formation. Binary fission is when single cell organisms split into two identical copies and some examples are amoeba and algae. Budding is when areas of multicellular organisms undergo repeated mitosis to form an identical organism and some examples of it are sponge and hydra. Fragmentation is when a part of an organism breaks off and the grows back with the clone of its parent and a example is starfish. Vegetative reproduction id when special cells in plants that develop in to structures that form into new plants identical to its parent and some example are strawberries and potatoes. Spore formation is when some bacteria, micro-organisms, and fungi can form spores – single cells that grow into a whole new organism and some examples are fungi, micro-organisms and some bacteria. There is two types of cloning which are human assisted cloning and also therapeutic cloning. The purpose of human assisted cloning is to create desired results with organisms. And the purpose of therapeutic cloning is to correct health problems.

The two aspects in the First Peoples Principles of Learning that I am going to connect to, are interconnectedness and sustainability.

In beginning of the year, me and my class participated in the SSEP project which was a project that we got to choose a experiment and in the end all experiment proposals would go to the judges. The judges would then assess everyone’s and choose one experiment and send it to space to conduct that groups experiment. I noticed this project had a lot of sustainability because there had to be a reason to this experiment if we wanted our experiment to be chosen. We also had to state what benefits this experiment would bring to our world for future generations in one of the sections in the proposal.

We have been doing a project called Engineering Brightness which our goal is to send flashlights to the Dominican Republic to villages where there is no electricity. Me and my group are fundraising so that we can buy the supplies for the building of the lights. In this project I noticed that there is a lot of interconnectedness in this project since we as a class have been contacting the Dominican Republic as well as New Brunswick. Me and my group have been also collaborating with Pitt River Middle School and also was planning to go to Kilmer and other elementary schools in the community.


Learning involves generational roles and responsibilities:

During the SSEP experiment me and my group divided the proposal sections throughout the group so it could be done efficiently and equally. Unfortunatley some people in our group didn’t take it seriously and broke our group trust but there was someone in the group who helped a lot in the proposal with me which made me want to group up with her for future group projects. In our EB project I teamed up with people that really care and we mostly do many things together but I had the responsibility to create the posters and Janna had the responsibility to keep in contact with Pitt River. However all of us try to make it to the meetings with Pitt River’s Leadership team which is also a responsibility that each of us have.

Learning involves patience and time:

The Engineering Brightness does involve a lot of patience and time. Nothing is done in the blink of an eye, we did many planning, took the time to create presentations, posters, contacting another school. We needed to give them time to think about whether they want too help us or not. We also have to contact through email and plan when we are meeting with Pitt River. We also have to go on our own time to the meetings so that we don’t miss school. We have to be patient because not everything goes the way we want it to.

Learning requires exploration of one’s identity:

Throughout these projects I learned many things. Both of these projects will be an experience of a lifetime. This is the first time I have actually gone out the real world trying to solve something (light poverty) and also done a project where mine experiment had the chance to go to space. I got the chance to revisit my previous school. I have explored many things in these two projects that I haven’t in other school projects in my previous years of education. Throughout these projects I explored through various emotions and feeling such as frustration, nervousness, excited, happiness,  being proud of something, etc…

Learning is embedded in memory, history, and story:

The Engineering Brightness Project have created many memories with friends and also got to meet new people. If I get to state my interesting experiences in my resume, I would surely have this in there. Last year we had to write out our life story as an assignment and if I ever had to do something like writing out another story I would have my experience in there. This has been a experience in a life time and I hope to make the best of it.


Mutation Story

Part 1

Hello I’m Rose, I am also known as Cystic Fibrosis and my host’s name is Ashley. So I, Cystic Fibrosis am in Ashley’s body. Ashley has me because both of her parents had a defective gene in them which she inherited. In other words both of your parents would need to have a defective gene in order for their child to have Cystic Fibrosis.


Cystic fibrosis is an inherited disease caused by mutations (changes) in a gene on chromosome 7, one of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that children inherit from their parents. CF occurs because of mutations in the gene that makes a protein called CFTR (cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator).” when a person has CF they create an abnormal CFTR or no CFTR protein which causes the thicker mucus.

“The defective gene codes for production of a protein that controls the flow of salt and water outside the organs, including the lungs and the pancreas.” which basically means that the defective gene messes up the production of the protein that controls the salt and the water located outside the organs. Which then the amount of salt and water becomes unbalanced. When that happens the mucus that is produced becomes much thicker than it should be and makes it harder for Ashley to breathe and cough the mucus out.

Since Ashley has Cystic Fibrosis (Me), she has a shorter life span than normal people. Ashley also has a higher chance of getting lung infections. Cystic Fibrosis can also create pancreas diseases which then your body wouldn’t be able to digest and receive nutrients that your body really needs access to, due to thick mucus.

There are many symptoms to Cystic Fibrosis but it isn’t always the same for all. It also depends on how severe their condition is. Some of the symptoms of Cystic Fibrosis are salty tasting skin, badly coughing, shortness of breath, and much more. In order to find out if they have Cystic Fibrosis (Me) they usually do sweat tests where they take a sample of your sweat and determine the level of salt (chloride) you have in your body. if someone has a high level that means that they have Cystic Fibrosis.

There isn’t a cure to Cystic Fibrosis but there treatment options such as Airway Clearance Techniques (ACT) where you are in a position where you can loosen mucus as well as using inhaled medication. However there are many more ways in treatment than just these two. You can prevent lung infections by washing your hands a lot, keeping away from people with contagious illnesses but the main idea is to keep yourself clean and away from things that can harm the body.

So now that we know more about Cystic Fibrosis let me talk about Ashley. My host, Ashley got me when she was a baby and now she is eleven years old. Ashley has become very weak and lost a lot of her weight over the years. She isn’t very healthy because her body can’t digest all the nutrients that she needs. She does take a lot of medication because Ashley’s condition is very severe. Over the years she has had many lung infections which took antibiotics and also staying in the hospital for long periods in order to recover. The doctors have said to her that she does have a good chance of living to her forties because of the developed technology.

The process was good and I tried kept track of all my questions I searched and the links so that later on I could easily complete part two. I could have started earlier but other than that I like and enjoyed the project.







Engineering Brightness Reflection #1

For the past few weeks our class has been working on a project called “Engineering Brightness”. Engineering Brightness is a project where students make flashlights to help people in other communities going through light poverty. We had a skype chat with Eladio and Dennis (two staff members of a private school) in the Dominican Republic. They shared with us the conditions that people are in without electricity. And our class got the chance to ask some questions that we were curious about. My question to them was how much of the population does not have electricity in the Dominican Republic. We also talked with Mr. Fogarty who is a teacher in a High School in New Brunswick. He gave us some good tips on how to ship, what not to ship, tips on fundraising, and many more. I really liked collaborating with different classes in the world. Not only did it help me but my whole class to think of ideas.

I’m in a group with Janna and Angie and our first idea was to buy flashlights but later on we thought that we don’t have enough time to fundraise and buy flashlights because winter break is almost here soon and then we only have another 3-4 weeks to do everything. So in respond to the light poverty that is going on in the Dominican Republic, me and my group are hoping to raise $1500 towards helping to build flashlights. So far me and my group have tried collaborating with Pitt River Middle School’s Leadership Team by emailing them and sending them a PowerPoint about what’s happening in the Dominican Republic. Janna’s sister and her friends are also in the leadership and are willing to help. We are hoping to fundraise by having a bake sale, having a contest, getting it through the announcements etc…. We also would like to talk to City hall after winter break to get our word on the SD43 school website if neccesary.

Tuesday December 6 2016

So today me and my group got the chance to go to Pitt River Middle School in the morning before school to tell them what is going on in the Dominican Republic to the Leadership team. We were really excited to speak and come to the middle school we used to go to. When we told them about what the Engineering Brightness Project was and what is going on in the Dominican Republic, they were very passionate and enthusiastic and really wanted to help us fundraise. Everybody had ideas, some had connections to Kilmer Elementary School, District Leadership and much more. Our idea of getting Pitt River Leadership involved was a great one because before they didn’t really have a topic to fundraise towards but now they can help us and even continue fundraising until the end of the year if they wish to raise money for other classes who wants to make lights next semester. We told them that our goal was to raise about $1500 knowing that we need more materials later on. We couldn’t show them our PowerPoint on light poverty which was created by Janna one of my group members but I did create some posters which I gave to them to hang around the school. Overall I thought that this visit really helped us create more connections, improved our speaking skills and will help us reach our goals. We forgot to say a few things, like on the poster I mentioned that, “the rendezvous how donates the most money will get a PIZZA PARTY”. We also forgot to take a few photos with Pitt River Leadership team because we had so much to say and little time. We hope that we can go to Pitt River next week to see how things are going and maybe give some tips and take photos as well.

The apple will create the most electric voltage because it’s sweet and doesn’t contain a lot of juice.


We experimented on 3 types of fruits which was an orange, green apple and a yam. We did have a mandarin orange but we left that out because it would get all messy, but instead of the mandarin orange we used a different orange.

We noticed that the higher voltages caused the pointer to go backwards from zero. I observed that everything in a circuit has to be in some way connected in order to work. We didn’t have the lightbulb hooked up to the circuit because we hooked it up to the volt meter. We just pushed the nail and the wire into the fruits without cutting it open.


If your bulb doesn’t glow, why not?

  •  The bulb may not be working
  •  There may be something wrong with the circuit.
  •  not enough voltage given to light a light bulb

What is causing electrons to flow in this experiment?

  • The voltage is the amount of energy and pressure it gives for the electrons to move in the circuit.
Basically our most important finding was that all of fruits or vegetables gave the same voltage. My prediction was partly correct because it did give a voltage but they all gave the same amount. If we did is again, I wonder if we used lemon or lime in our experiment what voltage that would give.

SSEP Final Reflection

From the beginning of the year we have started this SSEP project which stands for Student Spaceflight Experiment Program. This is a program that lets students to look for a problem and to experiment it in space.This has been a cool experience to experiment with real science which I have never really done before this experiment. This really gives a sense of what being a scientist is like.

The Main Question:

What physical, chemical, or biological system would I like to explore with gravity seemingly turned off for a period of time, as a means of assessing the role of gravity in  that system?


Throughout this program we did a whole lesson learning about microgravity which really is when there is no gravity in an orbiting spaceship. We also got the opportunity to go to Heritage Woods Secondary to learn more about this program. I unfortunately didn’t go but Angie, one of our group member did go.

One of the first things that we did as a class was brainstorming things that we would want to experiment in space, no matter how big or small they were. It was weird but it was the easiest part out of all this.

After we got in groups, we had to think of POSSBLE experiments that we would use for our actual project but we really had no idea. Somethings that we had as ideas were:

Plant growth (can we grow plants in microgravity?)

would food rot at the same rate as on earth?

Does human hair grow at the same rate on a human in space as on earth?

Experimenting on insects (general idea)

What type of cheese would mold faster?


Each day we were getting closer to needing to know our experiment that we would be finally doing. However we just couldn’t come up with a good experiment. We also were limited in materials because it had to fit in a 10ml FME tube. There were also a list of material where we were not allowed to used or our proposal would not be accepted.  One day I just randomly came up with the idea of experimenting with hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol. However I had no idea how I would measure and do anything because I had no experience.  I told my sister about this SSEP project and she told me that when she was back in high school they did experiments with bacteria and how they did it. That conversation gave me the hope that the bacteria experiment might be the one we will be doing. I told my group that we will use sanitizer and alcohol to see if it will kill any bacteria and they liked the idea so we went with that idea.

After a few days we started experimenting with bacteria to see if it actually works. In this experiment we were aiming to know if bacteria was going to be killed by the hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol so that we could proceed with this idea for our SSEP project.

We did three tests:

1. sanitizer alone

2. rubbing alcohol alone

3. mix of both

And we found out that the mix of both killed the most bacteria. So this experiment did work which means we can use it for the SSEP experiment.

There also was a seven section proposal that had to be done by us, which in my opinion I think was the hardest part of all. The review team were being very specific and serious. We did manage to get it done but it really needed critical thinking and a lot of work. We worked very hard on this and I tried my best. We did go through difficulties in making this the best it could be, but in the end we were happy that this was done and handed in with all our effort. The proposals from our class went to the SD43 review team to be looked and reviewed for the top 30.

What really helped us was the assignment where we had to go online and examine a groups experiment from previous years that won. That assignment helped us give ideas and gave us confidence that we can do this. We also got to learn about the SSEP opportunity during a Pro d day where most people went to learn more.


Overall I learned many things throughout this project. I learned how to write a proposal and collaboration was really key in the proposal. We learned from our mistakes and we did have difficulties but we problem solved our way out of things by working together. I really liked the idea of sending an experiment to space. I disliked the amount of materials that were restricted so we didn’t have a lot of choice and it also had to fit the 10 ml FME tube. I also disliked the part where we had to write the proposal. Our group could have tried harder with writing the proposal and contributing in this project. This challenge did need a lot of critical thinking, being serious and patience, so that’s how I overcame this project. in the end I was really happy that this was over and I knew that there were more competitive groups but I did try my absolute best in this WHOLE project and especially the proposal.
