Thoughts on Data Analysis 2017

1.) Explain what role you think statistics have in our society.

Statistics have big roles in our society.  They can make you into an intelligent consumer of statistical claims because it helps you reflex and analyze the questions you encounter.  Nowadays, we have a lot of data. We need to extract information from this data and draw conclusions from this information. This is where the statistics enter the game, with tools that allow us to extract information and figure out how much we can trust this information  When used correctly, statistics tell us any trends in what happened in the past and can be useful in predicting what may happen in the future too. It can also help us see everyone’s opinion from a different point of view. 

2.) Explain anything new that you have learned about the importance of statistics in our society

Statistics involves making decisions, using statistics, you could plan a production according to what the customer likes and wants, and you can check the quality of the products far more efficiently with statistical methods. You can also use statistics to collect information, analyze data, and test hypotheses.

3.) Describe the different types of problems with statistics

There are a lot of different types of problems with statistics, for example, some statistics can be true but misleading; there was this time when Colgate claimed that 80% of dentists recommend the brand. Consumers were led to believe that 80% of dentists recommended Colgate while the other 20% recommended other brands. But it turns out that when the dentists were surveyed, they could choose several brands, not just one. This is an example of when someone wants to use statistics to make a point, there are many choices of just what numbers to use.  Another problem could be bad sampling. Usually, statistics are obtained by taking a sample from a larger group and assuming the whole group has the same characteristics as the sample… but sometimes this doesn’t work out very well. Let’s say that I go to the mall with my clipboard and ask people who walk by to give their opinions. I’m only going get the opinions of people who shop at that mall, on that particular day; at that particular time; and who take the time to respond. I would only get a bunch of biased data on individuals that likely don’t represent the city at all.

 

 

11.1 Factors Influencing Data Collection

When I first read the article, I noticed that I never really paid attention to statistics, and I didn’t really care about it. It talked about students choosing which shirt they liked the most.

After learning about influencing factors, I now think that they are important and that they aren’t just useless. And there are a lot of things that could influence what your answer could be.

In the future, when reading and interpreting survey data I will pay more attention to them, and I will care a lot more about what I read and do. I will examine and try to interpret what they want to say and be careful.

Finance Questions – Math

1.List three things you spend money on each month that would be fixed expenses.

Fixed expenses occur regularly, the amounts do not change, and they are the same each time.

Groceries, Rent, Utility bills (cable, cell, electricity, water, etc.

2.List three things you spend money on each month that would be variable expenses.

Variable expenses do not occur regularly, and the amounts change according to choice, need or want.

Clothing and shoes, sports and recreation ( volleyball and dance classes ), eating out.

3.If you needed to save some money, how could you change your spending?

First, what I would do is to make a shopping list, that way I know the things that I need, because when you go shopping without a list, it’s really easy to go crazy. Another thing that I would do is take only the cash that I need, so that I do not expend a lot of money on not important stuff and I will be forced to only work with the cash I have on my hand. Also, before I buy anything, I ask myself: Do I really need this?.

4. How much money could you save in a month without giving up too much?

It depends on how much money you earn. For example, I could only save 50$ a month, but if I stopped going out and buying as much as I do, then I could save 100$ a month. My goal this year is to save money for travel, school, and some dance sessions I wanted to attend to.

What I learned this week

This week, I learned about the exponents laws, and here are some of them:

Rule: When multiplying powers with the same base, you add the exponents.

1) 5^35^4 = 5^7

5•5•5•5•5•5•5= 5^7

2) 3^33^2 = 3^5

3•3•3•3•3= 3^5

 

Rule: When dividing powers with the same base, you subtract the exponents.

1) 5^5 ÷ 5^3 = 5^2

2) 5^7 ÷ 5^4 = 5^3

 

Rule: To raise a power to a power, multiply the exponents.

Rule: When a product is raised to an exponent, you can rewrite each factor in the product with the same exponent.

( 3 × 2 ) ^3

( 3 × 2 ) ( 3 × 2 ) ( 3 × 2 ) = 3^22^3

Rule: When a quotient is raised to an exponent, you can rewrite each number in the quotient with the same exponent.

1) 5^4 ÷ 5^4 = 5^0 = 1

Rule: When the exponent of a power is zero, the value of the power is 1 (as long as the base is zero)

[ 2× ( -3 ) ] ^5

= 2^5(-3)^5

= -7776

 

Word problems with fractions.

I earned $250 at my job. I used 1/10 at McDonald’s, 1/4 for shoes and 1/8 for clothing. How much money do I have left for savings?

1. First I add all the money that I used.

1/10 + 1/4 + 1/8 =  19/40

2. Now multiply 250/1 × 19/40 (total of money that I used)

250/1 × 19/40 = 118 3/4  or 475/4

3. Transform the fraction into a decimal by dividing the numerator and the denominator.

475/4 ~  475 ÷ 4 = 118.75

4. I used $118.75 of $250.

5. 250 – 118.75 = 131.25

6.I have $131.25 for savings.
