The Five Themes of Geography

The five themes of geography are a framework that allows you to select and organize information for the teaching of geography.

Location

Absolute Location: Absolute locations are precise in their position on the globe.

Example: Port Coquitlam, B.C.  Is located 49.2 North Latitude, 122.7 West Longitude.

Relative Location: Locations described by time, direction and/or distance.

Example: Port Coquitlam is located East of Vancouver.

Place

Physical Landscape: Physical characteristics of a place formed by nature.

Example: Fraiser River,

Cultural Landscapes: Visible results of a human activity.

Example: Riverside Secondary, streets such as Morgan Avenue.

Movement

Globalization: A single global society created from economic, technological, political and cultural forces.

Example: Port Coquitlam, with all the different kinds of people living here.

Human&Environment Interactions

Humans interacting with the environment: Adaptation of humans in an environment & how they change to suit their needs.

Example: Near Citadel Middle School, trees were cut down to make room for houses.
