Wave Phenomena

Constructive Interference is the energy from both sources of energy combine to create one big wave.

Destructive Interference is the energy/waves cancel or phase out, because the crest and trough meet.

Standing Waves happen when the amplitude and wavelength are the same creating a node that “doesn’t” move.

How do noise-cancelling headphones work?

Noise-cancelling headphones use destructive inference to cancel out the incoming sound. They listen to the surrounding sound and than continue to create the opposite sound, so that the crests line up with the troughs and vice-versa. They are typically surrounded by noise-cancelling material that helps with the process.

Tech Team Innovation

Step 1:

What aspects of Tech Team are successful? Explain why.

Tech Team is successful in our passion projects. Everyone has been working tremendously to get things done and we are all excites with the outcomes. Tech Team is succeeding in guiding our school towards new innovated ideas and improvements. As a group we have been helping students and staff with their technological issues and we are problem solving to best of our abilities. We are succeeding in teaching them how to solve problems instead of simply solving it for them and making them dependent on us and our resources. There is never any hesitation if someone asks for our help. We have impacted the school, staff and students, in a positive way and will continue to do so for years to come.

What aspects of Tech Team are challenging? Explain why.

The aspects of Tech Team that are challenging are defiantly the schedule. We meet maybe once a week at lunch in addition to the meetings we must have with our passion projects. This is to be expected with an IDS class; however, it’s not that we could necessarily add more meetings, because of all the __ schedules. Additionally, it’s a bit hard to help someone who doesn’t have the same type of device that we use. We help as much as we can, but we don’t know that computer as well as we know our own. Possibly a few classes to specialized ourselves on different varieties on systems would be helpful.

What support does our school need from the Tech Team moving forward? Explain why.

Our school needs a way for us to be able to have an “on-call” system. A way to connect a Tech Team member during the day so that everyone can be helped. Even though we have the Wave, there isn’t always someone there, making it difficult for the student and\or to get the help and support they need.

What can we do to improve our support for our school?

Teaching teachers and staff the basics of technology might be way for the students, particularly the grade 9s, to feel more supported. Teachers also could learn how to properly use projectors. Tech Team members should also be trained with every system as it seems as if the Window members can only help students with Windows. A well-rounded member might be more helpful than an expert of one device. Furthermore, a few digital trouble-shooting classes might guide us to help others as efficiently as possible.

Step 2:

What are some things other Tech Teams are doing that we may want to apply at Riverside?

There is a lot of things that I could find; however, Tech Team doesn’t have a feedback option which other programs do. This would allow students and staff to give constructive criticism on how we can improve, what we did right/wrong or what we’re missing. Another thing that other Tech Teams offered that we don’t is the “on-call” system. They had a way for the member to be distributed where needed. They also had teacher and parent workshops. This would be beneficial to the students as they would have support constantly near them. They have a student digital skills program; therefore, it wasn’t just a day to learn everything like Riverside does, but a class where they can learn the ins and outs of their device.

Has you research created any ideas that the Tech Team can implement here?

My research has helped me come with the ideas of ways for our school to feel more supported. The teacher workshop seems like it would be the most effective. The research also backed up the idea of an “on-call”  team for Riverside. A different group of people each block during their off-block might be a way to implement our on type of “on-call”  team. I also believe having multiple workshops for students instead of one will create a better stepping stool for them then the one workshop they go through. This will be helpful, because grade 9s are overwhelmed and do not always take in everything they should be right away.

Exploring Waves Lab

Transverse Wave

A wave that is pulled sideways, the disturbance is at right angle to the direction that the wave will travel.

Pulse

Pulse is a non-repeating wave; single disturbance

Periodic Wave

Period Wave is a wave recurring at regular intervals (requires regularly repeating disturbances)

Longitudinal Wave

Longitudinal Waves occur when several turns of the spring are compressed and let go. Disturbance is in the same direction as the direction of travel.

The Crucible Project Based Learning

How have you personally connected to, “The Crucible?”

“The Crucible” explores many different themes that are not only reflect my life, but the life of those around me. For the project, Liza and I chose to explore power. I learned that in a lot of circumstances, power plays a role in my life, whether it is to choose what university I want to go to or who is right. It’s typically the person who voices themselves the best that has the ability to gain the attention of everyone and “win the battle”. Which makes me pose the question: ‘do they have the right to make a decision for the people who don’t know how to speak up?’. There has been a plethora of decisions that have been made during this plot, a few that made me questions the decisions I’ve made: ‘the decisions that I make, are they to benefit me or others?’; ‘do I consider my reputation when I choose to do something?’; or ‘has someone ever overruled my judgement, because they had a prejudice against me?’. “The Crucible” also allowed to me to reflect on two other main themes, peer pressure and reputation. These two work hand in hand in my reflection, because I believe when someone gives in to peer pressure, they are trying to save their reputation or simply ‘fit in’. I try my best not give in, but have I? Have I compromised my morals too ‘fit in’? I do not believe I have, but it’s also a possibility that I may be blind to it. This play has allowed me to consider the decisions that I’ve made and why I have made them.

How has the exploration of “The Crucible,” deepen your understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others, and the world?

“The Crucible” brings to light an abundance of themes that deepen my understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others and the world. Firstly, no identity is set in stone; for example, Parris in the beginning wanted to save his reputation, but towards the end of the story he chose his family. To me it seems as if we will never be able to fully understand someone’s thoughts or decisions. I know that people are difficult to analyze, but this play allows me to see that it’s a lot more difficult than I had believed. People do things to benefit themselves or sometimes they are just stubborn, but we really don’t know why they do things. There are so many sides to a person and everyone has a different view or opinion on everyone. Truth be told this is because people put on a different face for everyone trying constantly to ‘fit in’ and keep their ‘perfect reputation’. The world is complicated and messy, but it is also filled with love and decisions. No two people are the same and we are allowed to change ourselves, our opinions or our beliefs. Nothing is perpetual.

Photo Poetry Analysis

V-J Day Kiss Times Square, 1945

Introductory:

At first glance some may see an innocent kiss from two lovers; however, if one delves deeper the true story will shine through. A sailor coming home after the war surprises someone with the gift of love. This photo is filled with intense emotion of love, hope and gratitude. With the war ending and all the tragic soldiers and civilians that died, there was still love.  Without doing any research, this image is iconic, because it is a symbol of love. In addition to all the hate going on around the world, there was still reasons to be happy and thankful, a reason to look on the bright side. This image represents motivation. Incentive to continue living for all the deceased; encouragement that there is still good in the world, that not everything is black and white. The kiss they shared is a passionate display of affection towards the dreadful feeling of worry and absence.  If one looks closer into the photo, one will see people smiling in the background as such a warmth has been missing for many years. Hearts may sink knowing they will never see their loved ones again, but a miracle took place in this photo. Two people in distraught by the war, found tenderness and happiness again.

Poem:

The Kiss

Flowers no longer grew,

For the skies were filled with gloom,

Ashes roamed around our homes.

For I have sailed the great seas,

And wrestled the great battles.

And not until I heard the wails of glee

Did I realize, I’d no longer have to

Point a trigger towards the light of a flower.

For they may flourish again

And the skies may clear.

For I needed to run

And shout.

Sharing a dream

With someone else,

A simple kiss.

No harm would be done,

For the world became blessed by a dove.

An innocent, ingenious gesture spread throughout the Times

For we were kissing the war goodbye.

Reflection:

Firstly, the research helped a great deal, because my original thought was that the sailor was kissing his wife that he had not seen since he went off to war. However, the real story is that he heard people yelling that the war was over; out of happiness and in celebration he went off kissing multiple women of all kinds. The word ‘flower’ is symbolism to people and ‘light’ is symbolism for life. This is crucial to this poem, because it represents the fact that during the Second World War, and all wars in general, people had no opportunities to grow and their souls would die in battle, if their bodies had not. Therefore, since the war is over, humanity now has the opportunity to flourish. At the end of the poem there is symbolism of peace, which comes from the word ‘dove’, that has been placed there as an allusion to the war ending. All the concepts of ‘war’, ‘battle’ and ‘seas’ is an allusion to the Second World War and the repetition of ‘great’ is to emphasize the fact that the war was dangerous and infamous. To capture the emotion of this iconic to photo I tried to make the poem sound euphonic by using muted, buzzing and hissing sounds. As well as, making sure the words have a pleasant sound to them when combined. This can be seen in the alliterations and assonances. Nevertheless, there is also cacophony when relating back to the war. The metaphor, “Point a trigger towards the light of a flower”, means that the sailor no longer has to kill or see other people dying, because no one will be point a gun towards another person, threatening their life. “Kissing the war goodbye” is also an allusion towards the iconic image itself as this is what some would have called this photo back in the day and currently.
