A Place at the Table Response

1)One case of food insecurity was Barbie and her family. She was a single mother with two kids and was using food stamps, her kids didn’t have much but they always had food. She was never worried whether her kids would get to eat she just had to stretch it out. Her youngest, a boy, has an immune deficiency specifically, G6PD, he has hearing problems, and a speech delay. He has developed these problems because his mom is unable to properly feed him, despite her countless efforts. Towards the end, she managed to get a job but the job made it so she didn’t qualify for food stamps or subsidized child care. Which, causes her to worry about whether her kids will be able to eat because now she can barely afford food, if she can afford food.

Another case is when a father, Joel, who worked as a rancher, of two kids had to take up a second job cleaning a school, while his wife worked an hour away from home so the family could make ends meat. Their two kids go to Pastor Bob’s after-school program, Kids Cafe because the parents are at work. The kids get fed a hot meal after-school which helps Joel and his wife with feeding the kids, as well as, them having a place to hang out after school.

2)My reaction to this movie was more personal. I was raised by a single mother and times would get hard, she worked up to I believe 5 jobs at one time, which sometimes still wouldn’t be enough money. So when we needed to we did utilize food banks and government assistance. I remember my mother hating to do this because it feels degrading, but she loved us enough to swallow her pride, and use them. I knew we had problems with money at around the age of 7, so I was even constantly worried about whether we would get to eat. I remember that I would countlessly offer to give up my birthday and Christmases to make sure we get food for dinner. I remember my mom time and time again not to worry about it, but that didn’t stop me, my whole life I worried about my family’s finances, I still do. So, I didn’t really think it was just people in a far away country who dealt with food problems, because my family did. What surprised me was how many families struggled. In my school, I was the only one in my friends who struggled, everyone else had both parents, a nice house, and wasn’t struggling, but I was. This was a little embarrassing and I was worried I would be judged, I still am, but I wouldn’t change what happened either. Seeing the video and seeing that there are so many people struggling greatly surprised me and makes me wish that there was a way to fix this whole problem, because the issue is a horrible one that should be fixed as soon as possible, but the governments aren’t trying.

3)I think I would make it so most of the money doesn’t go to corporations who sell junk food, but instead the money goes to actual family farmers and fresh fruit and vegetables. That way the rate of childhood obesity would go down and nutrition levels would increase, because children would be getting actual proper food, since the parents would buy healthy foods instead of chips, pop, and other junk food. I would also change the policy that makes it so if you’re above a certain household income then you no longer get subsidies or other help. People have to start managing there money, but in a very wrong way. People have to decide to either make less money so they get the subsidies and help they need, or make as much money as they can but not get the help they need, and then struggle so much more, financially. This isn’t right because the country are trying to help poor people, but once they are above a certain income they don’t get the help anymore, even if the income they earn isn’t enough to live on. I would change the policy, so it’s not a blanket policy instead it would be a case by case basis, and the policy would help the person or family, until they don’t need the help.

Discrimination: Dangerous or Just Words?

Why do some people feel the need to discriminate someone because of their race or culture? What conflicts may arise when one has a minority identity? Alex Dang the poet of “What Kind of Asian are You?” is an Asian-American who is Vietnamese and Chinese that was born and grew up in Portland, Oregon. “Asian” is about Dang’s view on discrimination and stereotypes that is put onto Asians. Additionally, it is about how these discriminations and the stereotypes have affected him throughout his life. The comedian of Homecoming King, Hasan Minhaj is a Muslim Indo-American that was born in Davis, California. His parents moved to America, where he was born, and then his mother moved back to India while he lived with his father. King is about Minhaj’s life and how he was discriminated in multiple scenarios because of the colour of his skin. Whether it was discrimination that was upsetting for him or discrimination to the point of violence. Dang faced discrimination that lowered his self-esteem and caused him to feel shame; in addition, Minhaj also faced discrimination but it was more extreme. Although, Dang was only being stereotyped while Minhaj was discriminated to the point of violence. Regardless of these differences, both the sources show the difficulties and obstacles of being a first generation immigrant in North America.

As a kid people discriminated against Dang and his culture just because he is Asian. People stereotyped Alex which caused him to feel shameful of something that he was born into and could not change: “And I still feel the shame of being Asian” (Dang, 68).  Dang was ashamed because he was different and people did not treat him the same: “the anger I felt when those kids thought I’d get them sick” (Dang, 78-79) People were ignorant and assumed that whatever is part of an Asian culture, Dang would be an expert on the topic: “every time you confuse me with some other nationality that I might share similar features to is stripping away my individuality” (Dang, 65-67). It did not matter if it was Japanese, Korean, from other Asian countries or cultures, they all seem similar so they must know the same things: “Like how every time you lump an Asian person into one culture is systematically making us assimilate into an America we thought was better than our war-torn home” (Dang, 62-65). Society is not treating Asians as different individuals but rather people of different countries but the same culture and knowledge of everything Asian. Which groups them into one big group taking away their individuality.

Hasan Minhaj and his family was discriminated against in America because they were Muslims and they had a darker skin colour. Someone discriminated Minhaj right to his face as they were smiling. Minhaj was going to take a white girl to prom but her parents found her a new date who just so happened to be white: “I see Jeff Burke putting a corsage on Bethany’s wrist” (Minhaj). The girls mom said, “We have a lot of family back in Nebraska and we’re going to be taking photos, so we don’t think you’d be a great fit”, implying that he could not be in the picture because he was Indian and had darker skin; the family was just protecting themselves from being shunned by the rest of the family. Since Minhaj’s skin was brown Bethany’s parents found her a new date. Furthermore, people discriminated Minhaj and his family to the point of violence. People discriminated Minhaj’s and his family to the point of violence. The day after 9/11 people phoned Minhaj’s house, threatened to kill everyone, then went to the house, broke the car windows, and robbed the family. On the phone call a person said, “Hey, 2631 Regatta Lane, that’s where you live, right? I’m going to fucking kill you” (Minhaj). But his father believed that if the discrimination did not kill him, he would take whatever abuse he was given: “These things happen, and these things will continue to happen. That’s the price we pay for being here” (Minhaj). Minhaj and his family was discriminated against and were treated like terrorists after 9/11 because of their skin colour but some immigrants believe that it is just the price for living in America. Which is not necessarily true, but also it does not mean that it will never happen. Racism is something that will just happen, it is not a price for living in the country but it also might happen. All of this can cause shame of being an immigrant or causing someone to not be happy with who they are.

In conclusion, both Dang and Minhaj were able to overcome discrimination despite the major differences between their lives. Dang was able to overcome the stereotypes and was able to ignore them. He was happy that he was Asian, not ashamed of it: “And I still feel pride. And I still feel heritage. And I still feel Chinese. And I still feel Vietnamese.” (Dang, 89-93) He still feels proud to be Asian despite the stereotypes and he does not let the stereotypes bother him. Minhaj was also able to overcome the racism and discrimination. One of they ways he overcame discrimination was by giving it time and realizing that it might always happen: “So this is a tax you have to pay? I’ll pay it” (Minhaj). He continued living his life and then eventually he forgot about the event: “You have a selective memory… tools, clear history” (Minhaj). Minhaj overcame the discrimination and understood that he could not change history.

Both Dang and Minhaj suffered from discrimination; although, Dang was discriminated against by the use of stereotypes while Minhaj was discriminated to the point of violence. But both of their lives showed what conflicts can happen being a first generation immigrant. Discriminating someone because of their skin colour or culture can cause shame and damage a person’s self worth. It can also be dangerous for the person that is being discriminated. Society needs to find a way to stop discrimination and racism because it is at the point of being dangerous and can involve innocent people dying because they have a different skin colour or are from a different culture.

Born a Saint Corrections

Paragraph 1:

Lord of the Flies by William Golding is a book that takes place during World War II. It is about boys who are being sent away from war, they crash land on a deserted island, and all the adults have vanished; the kids are in charge of themselves.

Humans are born good and it is society that makes them evil. It is possible to act good even when other people have given into society’s wicked ways.

Paragraph 2:

While everyone is acting in evil ways, it is possible to be good; it is difficult but even if it is just one person, it is possible.

In Lord of the Flies this person is Simon; he still has his innocence and is good, even though everyone else is acting savagely.

He helps out the little boys who are unable to do as much as him “Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands” (Golding, 57).

Paragraph 3:

Even though we are born both “Moral and immoral… mostly, the moral dominates” (Zak).

I like that I tried really hard on it and was able to get an A. I want to not put in some sentences that wasn’t needed and I want to work on having a better hook.

September Reflection

This past month in cooking I enjoyed most of the items we baked. My group did make a mistake during the cream puffs; we let them in the oven for too long even though I thought we followed the directions well. But, obviously we did something wrong and I will own that. But I enjoyed the baked goods we made because I have never made any of them before so it was an interesting new and fun experience. I liked all of them but one recipe over another but I would like to do the cream puff recipe again to try again and make sure I don’t burn them and to see what went wrong. I think my favourite recipe though was the Ponderosa Cupcakes or the Angel Food Cake because they tasted so delicious and weren’t super difficult to make. I liked the cupcakes because the flavouring was so simple yet it had such an impact on the taste. I like the Angel Food Cake because it was light and fluffy and seems like a good summer desert. I also really liked that we made a variety of things and not just all cakes, all muffins, or all cupcakes, it was a mixture of all.
