CBL Skype with Tanya Harrison

Tanya Harrison is a planetary scientist, she is a PHD student in Geology at the University of Western Ontario. She works mostly on collecting data for and from Mars. Aside from all of the hard work she does with Mars she is a professional photographer.

Yesterday in science class we joined Tanya in a Skype call and talked to her about outer space and what she does in her job. Everyone in the class asked her some questions to further our understanding about space.

My question was. “How do we know all this stuff about space if we haven’t been everywhere?”

Her answer was. “With all of the information that we can collect using probes, satellites and landers, they are able to use all of the data to figure it out.”

Question. “How do the Mars rovers move”

Answer. “The Mars rovers are controlled by people on the ground. Because the distance between Earth and mars is very great, the commands to the rovers takes around 40 minutes or more depending on how far away mars is at the moment. Because of how delayed the connection is, the rovers move very slow at speed of 0.14km/h.”

Some other things that I learned from our Skype call is that the rovers have found evidence of liquid water on the surface of mars. They have found streams of salt left from the water after the water has evaporated.

Scientists have also found out that the lost rover that they thought might have crash landed actually did land but malfunctioned during landing.

Before this Skype chat I was very confused and disinterested about space and now coming out of this experience I would love to look more into space.

“Taming of the Shrew” Stop Motion Inductions Scene Project

Ava and Hailey have made a stop motion video based on the induction scene from the famous Shakespeare play “Taming of the shrew”. The induction refers to the main story in the case of “Taming of the shrew” this part with sly, the very drunk man passed out on the floor of the bar and the lord who decides with his huntsman to trick Sly into believing that he’s been asleep for several years and that he is in fact the lord instead. Later in this Shakespeare play comes the inset which is with a completely new set of characters and story line, the induction and inset are tied together because the induction characters start to watch a play thus the inset and the other characters.

To represent the induction of this play they used stop motion technology, this was an effective way of making the old English in the story much easier to understand and to make the ideas easier to memorize. Although stop motion videos are a god way to simplify learning, the can also be quite difficult to compose. The hardest part about creating a stop motion video is the placement of the characters and the camera, to make an effective video you need to have one spot or angle from which you shoot and it’s important that the characters move very subtly so that the movement is consistent in the end product. Through the this project, Ava and Hailey learned about navigating new apps and also what goes into stop motion.

Propaganda Poster Write Up

In the propaganda poster regarding the novel “Animal Farm” the quote that was on the page said “we are strong, people are weak”. This statement implies that the animals in the story feel superior to the human raise. The techniques that were used to make up the propaganda poster is name calling, glittering generalities, band wagon and card stacking.

It is name calling because it states that “people are weak” there for it is putting something or someone down and making them self’s look better.

It is glittering generalities because it is a short phrase that has a deep meaning. The statement can be looked at from a deeper view but is summed up in six words.

It is band wagon because this statement is saying a strong opinion and persuading the viewers that animals are indeed stronger creatures.

And last is card stacking because it is more of an opinion piece, so if someone were to disagree with this statement it would become an argument.
