New Book Cover – “Sold”

Sold by Patricia McCormick is a book about a 13-year-old girl from Nepal called Lakshmi, that is being sold for child prostitution. The cover of the book is a picture of the young girl Lakshmi. I think that this cover is a good cover to choose from because it shows us what Lakshmi looks like. There aren’t any photos in the book, so it is nice to be able to see what she looks like. It also shows her facial expression and what she is feeling. She looks like she is in a lot of pain and struggling to get by in life. But her face also shows us determination. She looks like she is ready for whatever the world is going to throw at her next, and that she can get through it. She also looks slightly hopeful that she is going to get through this situation. I also really like that the colour of the book cover is yellow because of yellow means knowledge and learning to the Indian culture. So overall I think that this is a great cover for the book Sold because it really gives us an insight into who Lakshmi is without spoiling the book.

This is the original cover.

The cover that I chose to make for the new cover of sold is the one that I have attached down below. I made this one because without giving away what happens in the story, it shows the journey that Lakshmi has been through slightly. Lakshmi was living in the beautiful country of Nepal then was taken away to the not as nice side of India. I decided to keep the yellow title for the word sold because of how important the colour yellow is to Indian culture and I also like the way that the yellow popped out because the city colours in India were darker and the sky and the mountains in Nepal were like a light blue and white. I liked the contrast of the colours and how the title is the first thing you see because yellow is the first colour your eye can recognize. I also liked the font being bigger and right in the middle. That makes it very clear to read and easy to see the title. I know not all of India looks like the picture I chose, but that is what the part of India that Lakshmi was taken to looks like so I wanted the picture to be as real and close to what it would have looked like in real life.

This is the new cover that I made.

HCE 9 – English Write

The picture I chose for my HCE 9 – English Write assignment is the one entitled “Assimilation vs. Inclusivity” by an unknown artist. I chose this picture because even though it doesn’t have any words or writing on it, it addresses a HUGE problem that was caused by the Canadian government that can never be fixed.

This is the photo:

This picture speaks a thousand words. It shows what the indigenous people have been through. From having an amazing and unique culture represented with huge smiles and all the colours of the rainbow to empty souls and expressionless faces, wearing grey and white clothes. As you can easily tell, the indigenous people were happy with the culture and their family, but the English immigrants came to THEIR land and took it away from them. While they did that, they took the children from the families of the Indigenous people and took them to these residential schools and essentially brainwashed them into being white and following the English traditions. This picture shows the hell that the immigrants from Europe put these indigenous children through. It didn’t only affect the indigenous people then, it affected them now by almost erasing the entire culture. To the immigrants from Europe back then, shame on you.

  1. What do I see when I look at this image? I see a happy culture filled with smiles and beautiful colours to the right. Then to the left, I see sad children wearing colourless clothing and blank faces.
  2. How does this make you feel? At first, my eyes were drawn to the bright colours and the smiles which made me happy, then I looked over to the left and saw the frowns and the children, then it hit me, this picture was about the residential schools which made me very angry and made me feel sorry for them and sad.
  3. What does the image/picture seem to be trying to say? (What do you think the owner/author is trying to say to you?) I think it is trying to show us what the indigenous children were put through.

  • What questions did you need to research in order to create your sway?

I looked up the questions as they were stated in the word document. (i.e “What is the state of palladium at room temperature?”)

  • What new or familiar digital tools did you try to use as you worked through this project?

I used citation machine that I’ve been using for a few years now, and I used a periodic table website that I know has good and reliable information.

  • What was the process you used to investigate the topic?

I looked up each question one at a time in the sections and wrote them down on a word document in a way that was easy to read and that I could just copy and paste my information into the sway.

  • How did you verify and cite the information you found?

I looked at many different websites to make sure the information that I was using was true.

  • How did the process of completing this challenge go? What could you have done better?

I didn’t really understand sway so if I knew how to use it as I was going into this project I could have done it quicker and more efficiently.
