Survivors- Podcast by Diego Hickman and Emma Michael

Survivors. Survivors is a podcast about residential school survivors, hence the name “Survivors”. In our first, and last, episode we talked about the brave and inspiring Roy Dick. Against all odds, Roy Dick survived one of the biggest cultural genocides in history and was able to share his story. Roy Dick is apart of the Kaska Dena Indigenous group. He was born in Ross River and attended Lower Post Residential School.  He was only six years young when he was taken to Residential School. To say he was terrified when he was taken to school is an understatement. Being around other Indigenous children with old people telling him what to do in a language he didn’t understand, he was living a real life nightmare. All he wanted to do was run to his sisters for reassurance, but he was told that if he tries to go near them, something really bad will happen to him. This wasn’t even the worst part about this school. During his first year attending this school he was physically abused and during his second, he was sexually abused. He was forced to attend this type of school for 7 long, grueling years from 1961- 1968. Leaving his school with this trauma, he did know what to do. In his later teenage years, he turned to alcohol. He abused alcohol for roughly 30 years and had a major addiction. He had car ride with his sister hungover and his sister stated that she was very worried for his well being. He took that concern to heart and got the treatment he needed in white horse. In our podcast, we give a full deep dive into Roy’s story and the history of residential schools. This is Survivors.
