What Is Spotify?

Spotify is a music streaming app that charges the user a monthly payment of $9.99 that allows listening to music by a wide spread of artist, listening to music on the go becomes available by downloading the albums the user desire. family accounts are $14.99 that allows 6 other people a Spotify premium account. If payment is not available listening to music has its restrictions such as, 6 skips an hour, listening while having some source of Wi-Fi, ads every other song, and not being able to change the timing of songs. obtaining playlist from other users is accessible by adding them as a friend a adding the playlist the user’s library.  Was created on April 23 in Stockholm Sweden by Daniel Ek co-founder and CEO, Martin Lorentzon co-founder. According to a certain article, “…Ek and Lorentzon…grew frustrated with the limitations of finding and listening to music using a computer”(Product Habits Blog). Originally, they wanted to create a peer to peer music streaming program like “Napster,” which is an illegal streaming program where users had to download music from torrent files. EK soon after realized that piracy had its own limitations besides its illegality. Downloading a song, took several minutes to download, and audio quality varied depending on the download. Spotify is a huge improvement from Napster, Spotify provides music instantly, high quality audio, no downloads, and is completely legal. EK stated during an interview with the Daily Telegraph, “I realized that you can never legislate away from piracy” (Daniel Ek 2010). Spotify makes money through advertisements and subscriptions, 91% of revenue are from subscriptions and the other 9% are from advertisements. Of the revenue made Spotify keeps 30% of the profit and the rest is given to license deals, artist, and music deals. In 2017  the most frequent users of Spotify were millennials aging between 18 to 29, although users seem to be young adults Spotify can be safe for children with parental control. Molly Swift wrote an article stating “Parents may want to discuss music choices with their child, both as a means of connecting and to keep your eyes out for inappropriate material entering their playlists” (Molly Swift 2020).
