English 11 – Year End Review

In this course I learned to analyze poetry and literature, I also learned to look for deeper messages in the writing such as allegorys, allusion and metaphores. I learned how to properly include quotes from poems and other writing along with how to properly set your page in MLA format. The thing I enjoyed about this class the most was the interactivity between the class and the teacher, the class discussions were always interesting and no class was ever dull. My favorite unit was reading “Death of the Salesman” because of how interactive the process was. Acting out the play made in much more interesting and gave me a  greater knowledge of the play. My favourite piece of litterature was “Two Fishermen” because it was when I first realized how much deeper you could look at short stories. I improved at looking deeper into poems and short stories, but I need to improve on grammar and proof reading.

Character Monologues- “Death of a Salesman”

Linda

I am a loving wife who is undoubtedly devoted to my husband even though he is undeserving and does not show the same affection to me in return. I am supportive of my family and truly want the best for both my son’s and my husband. I always keep a positive attitude and never attack or assume the worst in anybody. I know for a fact that both my son’s will get on the right path and lead a happy life, I hope they do. I’m sure Willy is fine, I know he is stressed but he will be fine, he always makes it out in the end. I worry too much, my hair is starting to grey so much that Biff noticed I just want everyone to happy. When everyone’s lives are in order that’s when I can relax, for now everything I do is for Willy and the boys. My life is for them.

“The Lord Of The Flies”- Island Description

Scar

“Beyond falls and cliffs there was a gash visible in the trees; there were the splintered trunks and then the drag, leaving only a fringe of palm between the scar and the sea” (Golding,39).

The jungle

“They were in the beginnings of the thick forest, plonking with weary feet on a track, when they heard the noises—squeakings—and the hard strike of hoofs on a path” (Golding,39).

Fruit

“Then, amid the roar of bees in the afternoon sunlight, Simon found for them the fruit they could not reach, pulled off the choicest from up in the foliage, passed them back down to the endless, outstretched hands” (Golding, 76).

The sea

“The glittering sea rose up, moved apart in planes of blatant impossibility; the coral reef and the few stunted palms that clung to the more elevated parts would float up into the sky, would quiver, be plucked apart, run like raindrops on a wire or be repeated as in an odd succession of mirrors.” (Golding, 79).

The beach

“They had built castles in the sand at the bar of the little river. These castles were about one foot high and were decorated with shells, withered flowers, and interesting stones” (Golding, 82).

Conch
“Near to Ralph’s elbow a palm sapling leaned out over the lagoon. Indeed, the weight was already pulling a lump from the poor soil and soon it would fall. He tore out the stem and began to poke about in the water, while the brilliant fish flicked away on this side and that. Piggy leaned dangerously. “Careful! You’ll break it—” “Shut up.” Ralph spoke absently. The shell was interesting and pretty and a worthy plaything; but the vivid phantoms of his day-dream still interposed between him and Piggy, who in this context was an irrelevance. The palm sapling, bending, pushed the shell across the weeds.

Lagoon: “Within the irregular arc of coral the lagoon was still as a mountain lake—blue of all shades and shadowy green and purple.” (Golding 10)

Cliff

“The pink granite of the next cliff was further back from the creepers and trees so that they could trot up the path” (Golding 36)

Scar

“Behind this was the darkness of the forestproper and the open space of the scar” (Golding 10)

Mountain:

Every point of the mountain held up trees—flowers and trees. Now the forest stirred, roared, flailed.(Golding 46)

What Darwin never knew

What Darwin never knew
Michael Wilkinson
Darwin set off on his journey to the Galapagos in 1831, he sailed for 5 long years and it was on that journey where he made some of his greatest discoveries. These amazing discoveries were the building block of the theory of evolution, although it couldn’t be fully proven until now, that we have studies and a source to DNA. An example shown in the documentary was how the pocket desert mice had adapted to change the colour of their fur, depending on which habitat they lived in. (The dark or light rock) When Darwin observed similar events, he didn’t quite know how this occurred. By observing the two DNA strands of the pocket mice, we now know that a different of base paring can drastically change a species. (In this case, it’s fur colour.) The main advancement in studies in evolution and DNA, was that there are “switches” that turn on and off certain genes. This discovery helps us understand that all organisms practically have the same set of genes, but whether it is turned on or not makes us different. This discovery can also be supported in the evidence found in embryos. In the video, it compared about 6 different embryos in the starting stages, and they all looked similar. Although they change over time, their starting structures are very alike. The main conclusion within all the evolutionary research done in the past years, is that small changes in the DNA can have a profound effect. This changes the way we view the future of evolution. Since small changes can drastically change an organism, we know that it is possible to have something so complex as a human, be related to a smaller organism. We also could know that this process is still active, and changing in long periods of time. The essential structure of this theory, thought up by Darwin was a backbone for the launch of what scientists are still discovering today about DNA. If it wasn’t for Darwin the world we live in today could be very, very differen

The secret life of Walter Mitty – Narrative

Mitty stares at the fading stars

Michael Wilkinson                        The Landing
Block D
English 11

Mitty sneered and looked deeply into the eyes of each and everyone one of the members of the firing squad Mitty noticed something in the soldiers eyes, they were scared of him. Power surged through Mitty’s body he knew he had them by the neck, “what do I do now?” he thought. Then it came too him he started to laugh, the soldiers all looked at him with confusion but Mitty laughed and laughed until Smack! “Well I didn’t know you found the recent passing of my mother that funny?”. Mrs Mitty was looking at Walter with furious red bulging eyes. “Oh I’m…… I’m really sorry, I was thinking of something else”. “What on God’s green earth is that damn funny Walter?” Walter put his head down and tried to block out his wife’s constant yelling, “when will she ever stop”, Walter thought to himself. It was dark now and Walter found himself staring at the night sky, he could hardly make any stars out due to the city lights. Walter gazed into the night sky and realized he liked the stars better this way, they didn’t shine too bright and that reminded Walter of himself a “dying star”. “Where did you park the damn car Walter!” Mrs Mitty yelled with a disdainful look on her face. Walter Mitty did not reply for he was lost, lost in the most beautiful sight he had ever seen, the moon.

(…)”One small step for man” Mitty’s heart was pounding “was this a dream?” He thought. “Two small steps for man” he had many dreams of this very moment, he was the first person to ever walk on the moon. The feeling was inscrutable he had never imagined this day would ever come, for the first time in his life Walter was happy. “Walter we have a problem”, the voice beamed into Mitty’s ear from the radio, “an unidentified object has landed very close to you, we have absolutely no clue what it is”. Pandemonium ensued, Mitty could hear what seemed like thousands of of voices yelling from his radio in his helmet. “Maybe it’s the Russians!” He could hear someone yell. “Those damn Chinese they beat us”, another voice bellowed. “It’s aliens I’m telling you, aliens!”. Mitty needed to put an end to all this, he could see the dim figure of a round circular object in the distance. “I’m going!” Mitty’s said this with a confidence that even he didn’t know existed . “Don’t do it Walter you’ll die” it was the voice of Susie Blaine the prettiest girl in all of NASA. “I need to do it Susie, for you”, Walter said this with a sheepish grin on his face. “You’re such a brave man Walter”. He grew closer and closer to the unidentified object until he could make out what it was, a small dying star had crashed into the side of a giant crater and beside it stood a small boy who was crying. “Walter what the hell is going on out there”, Mitty switched off the radio he didn’t need their constant yelling in is ear. Mitty approached the boy “why are you crying? The boy looked at Walter and pointed to the crashed star. “Was this you’re home?” Mitty asked, the boy shook his head. “Then why are you crying?”, the boy looked up at Mitty there was an uncanny resemblance to himself. The boy finally spoke “that was my father, he didn’t want me anymore so he left”.

“Jesus Walter, could you stop grabbing my stomach you’re going to hurt the baby.” Mitty looked at his wife with tears in his eyes, “what’s you’re problem Walter? ever since we found out I was pregnant you’ve been acting strange”. Mitty kissed his wife and said “I’m ready”.

Photo Compilation Project for “Father and Son”

Quote

“I love him so much it hurts but he won’t talk to me” (Callaghan 1)

This quote shows how the father is desperately trying to reach out to his son.  He pours his heart out and he receives nothing from his back from his son. It shows how there is no communication with his son.

“Son you are living on borrowed time” (Callaghan 3)

This quote shows how the father is obsessed with the idea of his son dying. He is Terrified that his son will die. The father tries to tell his son that he is living a dangerous lifestyle, but the son does not listen.

“Is it my fault there is no women in this house” (Callaghan 2)

The fathers ponders on his last wife, and thinks that maybe his Son’s lack of purpose in life is due to the lack of a mother in the house.

“The door swings and he pushes a handgun under his pillow”(Callaghan 5)

The quote shows how the action rises when the father discovers the handgun under his owns son’s pillow. The father goes into complete shock, he prays under the landing and realizes the gravity of the situation.

“There is a bang” (Callaghan 5)

The climax of the story is when the father hears the loud bang. The father drops his plates and rushes to help his son. The father’s heart is beating fast and so is the readers, the climax starts and ends with a “bang”

“They have punched you and you are not hurt badly” (Callaghan 5)

The falling action is when the falling action  is when the father examines the gravity of his sons injuries. The father only seems to think that his son was punched and he does not realize the life changing hole in his son.

“I take my son’s limp head and I see a hole that should not be there” (Callaghan 5)

This quote shows how the father realizes that his son is dead. The one person he cared about so deeply is gone. This represents the falling action because the father now knows that his son is dead and that all he cared about is over.

“My son let me put my arms around” (Callaghan 5)

This is the denouement of the story as it closes off what we know. The son is dead and the father grieves for his loss. We do not cares for the person who shot him for that does not matter, all that matters is that the father grieves.

Capital punishment within the story “The Two Fishermen” -Michael Wilkinson

Capital punishment, is a form of legal punishment by murder for a crime committed. There are 5 formed of capital punishment: lethal injection, nude and gallows, fire squad, gas chamber and the electric chair. Canada commenced capital punishment in 1865, and continued all way up into 1976. You can be sentenced to capital punishment by premeditated murder, (arson, burglary, sexual assault, murder). The last official use of capital punishment in Canada was in 1962.

The short story “The Two Fishermen” by Morley Callaghan, it could take place in between the years 1865-1966 if it was set in Canada. It was considered “sexual assault so it could not take place after the year 1966. I believe that Thomas should not be sentenced to capital punishment, because he was preforming an act in defense of his wife and himself. The most important fact is that he did not plan the murders so it should not be considered “premediated”. He was also a younger and should not be treated like an adult.    “The people get prepared to convict the criminal”
