Midterm Self Assessment and Goal-Setting – Chem 12

Strengths and Weaknesses

After reviewing my strengths and weaknesses in chemistry, I’ve noticed that I am able to understand how reactions speed up or slow down (kinetics), but sometimes struggle with understanding the balance in reversible reactions (equilibrium). In solutions, I’m confident in solving concentration problems, but occasionally miss important factors affecting solubility.

Reflecting on what we’ve learned so far, I find kinetics easy because it’s logical and the math makes sense. Equilibrium is more difficult to understand because of the concepts. In solutions, I like the practical side of solving concentration problems, but I need to pay more attention to the details of solubility.

3D Data Visualization Project

Our 3D data visualization project was created over the span of 2-3 weeks, and our idea to create a model of the global child mortality rates was influenced by seeing that child mortality rates around the world are unexpectedly high, especially in developing countries. Most child deaths are preventable with access to proper healthcare and education, which most developing countries don’t have enough funding for, which is the main reason why we wanted to emphasize the issue of child mortality through our 3D model, and hopefully educate others about the importance of keeping younger generations safe, and the healthcare issues that are present within developing countries that are not being addressed as well.

We wanted a simple model which people can understand easily, in order to reach a larger audience and spread awareness, which is why we chose to design our model with simple colours and scales to represent the data in a way that most people would understand. The colours represent the main cause of death in the country, and the size of the child figure represents the amount of children dying per year, or the child mortality rate.

Climate Change Solution Fluency

Define:

Climate change is one of the main problems facing our generation right now. Rising sea levels, increasing temperatures, and extreme weather patterns are threatening our ecosystems and homes. However, us humans are the main cause of this problem. What can we do to change this before it’s too late?

Discover:

Canada has done many things to tackle the problems that climate change brings us, such as launching the Clean Air Act in 2006, which focused on removing emissions from cars and trucks by finding new, fuel efficient ways of transportation. This helped to remove greenhouse gases from the environment, and it was successful in reducing our carbon footprint as well. Now, in 2020,  Canada has goals to reduce our gas and methane emissions, investing money into creating new, efficient ways of transportation, and using renewable energy sources as much as possible.

Dream:

Some ways for us to take action against climate change:

  1. Use different modes of transportation that don’t emit gases (bicycles, scooters, etc.)
  2. Stop using single use plastics
  3. Reduce the amount of meat and dairy that you consume, and opt for vegetarian meals instead
  4. Educate others on the importance of reducing their carbon footprints
  5. Reduce your water waste
  6. Help plant more trees
  7. Use renewable energy sources as much as possible

Debrief:

I was able to learn new concepts about climate change and see what people are doing around the world to reduce their carbon footprints. I could improve this post by adding more detail to my Deliver, and more information on how you can reduce your water usage. The things I did well on this post were that I was able to add a lot of detail on the Discover part, by showing you what specific steps Canada was taking to prevent climate change.
