Questions:

In terms of maximizing diffusion what the most effective size cube that you tested?

The most effective size cube that we tested for diffusion was the smallest cube (1cm cube). This was the most effective because the smaller then cube the more efficient it’s diffusion is.

Why was that size most effective at maximizing diffusion? what are the important factors that affect how materials diffuse into cells or tissue?

The smallest cube (1cm cube) was the most effective at diffusion because it has the smallest volume, making it easier for diffusion to happen throughout the entire cube. Concentration, temperature, type of material, size of cell, and polarity are all important factors that affect how materials diffuse into cells or tissue.

If a large surface area is useful to cells, why do cells not grow to be very large?

Cells don’t grow to be larger in size because the larger the cell the less efficient they are with diffusion of materials. The process of diffusion will not occur through the inside of the whole wall. When the cell continues to grow there is less membrane for the substances to diffuse through resulting in the centre of the cell not receiving the substance that it needs.

You have three cubes A, B, & C. They have a surface to volume ratio of 3:1, 5:2, 4:1. Which of these cubes is going to be most effective at maximising diffusion?

The cube that will be most effective at maximizing diffusion is cube C with a ratio of 4:1. Cube C has a higher surface area to volume ratio, therefor for every cubic unit of cytoplasm there is more cell membrane than the A or B cubes. This ensures that the inside of the cube will be the most effective at diffusion allowing more materials to be able to enter the cytoplasm.

How does your body adapt surface area to volume ratio to help exchange gases?

Our bodies have altered larger organs which are formed by small spheres which cover as much surface area as possible in order to efficiently exchange gases. our bodies make sure the surface area to volume ratio is good and is established in the area where gas exchange happens.

Why can’t certain cells like bacteria get to be the size of a small fish?

Cell bacteria can’t be the size of a fish because they need to divide in order to keep a good surface area to volume ratio. Certain cells need to stay small for proper action. If the size of a small fish, the surface area to volume ratio would be too small to ensure proper diffusion through the entire cell.

What are the advantages of large organisms being multicellular?

the advantages of large molecules being multicellular is that they have the ability to grow to a large size due to the number of their cells increasing in the organism over time. Unicellular organisms only have one cell with one function, multicellular organisms contain many cells that have their own specific function within.

Neuron Communication Lesson

Neuron Structure

there are 3 different types of neurons the motor neuron, sensory neuron, and the interneuron.

Image result for there are three different neuron structures

All neurons are made of dendrites which receive information from other neurons and transmit them to the cell body, the cell body also known as the soma that receives messages from the dendrites and provides life functions, and the axon which carries neurons away from the cell body and to other neurons and muscles.

The motor neuron contains the 3 parts previously listed and the terminal buttons which are responsible for sending signals on to other neurons, the myelin sheath that converse the axon of some neurons and helps speed up neural impulse, and the action potential which is the signal that travels down the axon.

Neuron Functions

A neuron is a electrically excitable cells that transmits information through electrical and chemical signals, they are the fundamental units of the brain and nervous system. Impulses that are sent along the neuron are called action potential, the action potential is the electrical current that travels along the axon when a neuron has been stimulated. The key to neural function is the synaptic signaling process, it is partly electrical and partly chemical. Once the electrical signal reaches the synapse, a neurotransmitter is released by the neuron. This neurotransmitter will stimulate the second neuron, triggering a new wave of electrical impulse, repeating the same mechanism described above.

Synapse Structure

Synapse Function

The synapse is the point of communication between 2 neurons or a neuron and target cell, like a muscle or gland. At the synapse, the firing of an action potential in one neuron (the presynaptic) causes the transmission of a signal to another neuron (the postsynaptic) making the postsynaptic neuron either more or less likely to fire its own action potential.

When the action potential reaches the axon terminal the AP causes synaptic vesicles to release neurotransmitters into the synaptic gap, the neurotransmitters diffuse through the gap and bind to the receptors on the receiving end.

Science App Review

The app I found is a app that gives you information about  all the elements on the periodic table. The app is called Periodic Table it is a app that is downloaded from the app store on my Microsoft Surface I don’t know if it can be downloaded on all devices, but you can find apps that do the same thing as my app that I found. This app can help when doing projects because I gives fast access to all the information you need on each element that is found on the periodic table. It’s super easy to help with your homework as well because it gives you tons of information that you could find on more than one website all when u click on the certain element.

My Debrief: I learnt that this app has so many good things about it that are much easier than having to  search up a periodic table online every time you need to check an answer or find more information. Also I think I could of tried to play around and test the app to its limits but I think I did a good job.

Digital Foot Print Assignment

3 ways that could keep my digital footprint appropriate and safe would be:

  • The number one thing I think everyone should do is think before I send any messages, post any pictures, comment on  any photos, etc.. I should be considering what this could do to me in the future, would it affect me if my boss would see this, is it appropriate or should it be kept for my eyes only, many more things.
  • Also we could always search our names and usernames up on google and see what comes up. Example if nothings comes up the you are probably doing a good job of staying safe and responsible online. On the other hand if you found a lot of things about you then you should consider maybe putting your accounts on private, and thinking about what you post and if its necessary.
  • Last of all I think  most people should already know this but, think about who would see that comment or photo. Would you care if every one in the world could see what you said or see that photo.
