Once upon a time there was a keen little dog,

Inspired and determined to become a guide puppy.

So excited to attend this dog training school,

He was practically prancing towards the entrance of the university.

 

When he trotted inside, his joy suddenly shattered

As he saw the minimum height needed to attend the institution.

His tiny little size was nothing compared to the skyscraping scale,

He needed a solution.

 

Despite the unfortunate incident, the puppy would not give up.

He tried everything he could to seem to meet that standard height.

Though his efforts made no difference, a trainer watched and sympathized.

She let him in despite his size since his future looked bright.

 

The dog attended each class and course

But quickly found some difficulties.

His little size was just not suited

For the training taught typically.

 

Though these circumstances presented an evident obstacle

The pup wouldn’t choose to let this defeat him.

He knew the only way he could catch up to the others

Was to use his mighty brain to adapt and outsmart them.

 

He found ways around his disadvantageous height

And was showing great promise to his trainer and peers,

But when the final exam came and he slipped up,

He was failed and kicked out of the academy in tears.

 

Discouraged and dismayed, the young puppy trudged away,

Filled with sorrow and gloom, like a sky full of grey.

His purpose seemed lost, he had nowhere to go.

He felt useless until he saw a blind lady down the road.

 

She roamed unknowingly through a hazardous construction site,

And with a machine nearing, the dog filled with fright.

He knew what he had to do, and ran to her aid.

He led her to safety, no longer afraid.

 

As they made it to the sidewalk,

The dog no longer felt blue

As he had saved this woman’s life,

And his purpose came anew.

 

The trainers of the school witnessed his noble deed,

And realized this fearsome little dog was born to lead.

They granted him a bright blue cape, this puppy was hero!

For he didn’t allow being little to stop him, and found a new way to grow.

Social media is a globally accessible platform that is heavily integrated into our lives. And as much as we don’t want to admit, social media has generally become a necessity, especially to the current and upcoming generations. As humankind progresses and advances, it’s not hard to assume that technology will become more and more integrated into our lives, but with proper moderation and utilization, social media is very beneficial to us all.

Social media is essential to so many professions, whether a platform is used for marketing, promoting products, or even the development of exclusive brands and companies. With such an easily accessible market of consumers, social media has allowed people to successfully start and expand businesses, ultimately creating more jobs and opportunities across the globe.

Nowadays, most people become aware of global issues through social media, since not everyone watches the news. In this day and age, many show their support and sympathy for certain causes and environmental devastations through social media, whether it be informing others of issues or even donating to petitions and charities. There are even occasions where accounts on social media are created solely to shine light on the horrible things going on around the world, in hopes to put an end to such problems.

Of everything, social media is probably best known and used as a form of communication. It is much easier to come into contact with someone through social media, rather than ask for a phone number or email address, especially with the added cost of long distance calling. Social media allows you to stay in touch with your family across seas, since not everyone can afford a plane ticket. Its easy, convenient, and in the end, sustaining connections around the world that could’ve been lost due to hassle and lack of accessibility.

As you can see, social media can benefit us all, as long as we take responsibility and use it in the most efficient way. Social media will never disappear, so we might as well use it to our greatest advantage.

Math 10 Honors Numbers Summary

In the last few weeks, our class has learnt a lot about Numbers and Radicals. Most of the material we went over was familiar, although there were a few things that were brand new to me.

Prime Factorization:

One of those things is how when you use prime factorization, it can help you to determine the prime factors that make up that number. Prime factorization is really helpful because you are breaking down the number to its smallest roots, and that can help you find out a lot about the number.

HOW IT WORKS:

You start with a number you want to prime factorize. You then begin to break it up into whole multiples of itself, and then break those multiples into smaller multiples, and you keep doing this until you end up with numbers that cannot be broken up into whole numbers any longer, otherwise known as Prime Numbers. These last prime numbers are the prime factors of your original number, which means if you multiply them all together, you should end up with the original number.

GCF & LCM:

Another example is how you can use prime factorization to find the LCM and the GCF.

GCF: This is the Greatest Common Factor between two numbers. The easiest way to find a GCF is to prime factorize 2 numbers. Once you have done that, you take out the common factors within both numbers and multiply those together to get the GCF.

LCM: This is the Lowest Common Multiple between two numbers. The easiest way to find a LCM is to prime factorize 2 numbers. Once you have done that, you take out all factors of both numbers, except for the ones common between the two numbers. Then you multiply those together to get het LCM.

Radicals:

I also learned the concept of turning entire radicals into mixed radicals, and vice versa. This is a neat trick for simplifying radicals and making them into easier numbers to understand and work with.

HOW IT WORKS:

Find a number that is not a perfect square, cube, etc. Take out a factor that is a perfect square or cube, etc, depending on the root of the radical. Once you have found a number, root it so it becomes a coefficient. Keep on dividing the number inside the radical until you have a number that is not divisible by the root anymore. You will then be left with a mixed radical.

Converting Mixed to Entire:

To convert a mixed radical into an entire radical, you basically take the coefficient and depending on the root, you square or cube, etc, it and multiply it with the number inside the radical. Then you are left with a larger, “entire” radical.

Those were the highlights for me in this unit. I found these 4 things very helpful and interesting, and I will definitely be using these tricks in the future.

 

What’s in My Junk Food?

These are my favourite kind of chips. I like them because they are a little spicy and a little sweet, but also have a nice sour cream taste that acts as a nice base for the flavours. They are also kettle cooked chips, so the texture is a little crunchier and I really like it. Overall, I think the flavours are just a nice combination, and its a nice change from the usual chip flavours most people have.

These chips aren’t the healthiest choice because though they are kettle cooked which is supposedly healthier, they are still supplying a big source of fats. Per 28 chips (50g), you get 260 calories and 15g of fat. That is more than half of the recommended fat intake per day. Also, though that may not be as bad as other foods, there is an additional 400mg of salt, which is quite a bit for a “light snack”. Compared to other junk food, this isn’t the worst snack you could have, but it should be limited, or else you will obtain too much fat, and sodium as well.

May Reflection

I chose the DIY potatoes because they started out badly, but in the end came together quite nicely. They were also really tasty. At first our group had wanted to make mashed potatoes, but once we saw all the ingredients that were available, we wanted to try making something that could use all the yummy looking spices and herbs. We then decided to make pan-fried potato wedges instead. When we started to cook, we made the mistake of cooking the onions in the pan first, and they got too crispy by the time we added the wedges. The pan was coated in burnt onion, and the potatoes weren’t frying at all. We didn’t really know what to do, so we got out another pan and started cooking the other half of the wedges in a little bit of oil. Those crisped up really nicely, and the light sprinkle of mixed spices really made them quite tasty. Since the potatoes in the other pan were starting to crumble, we dumped it all in a bowl and mashed it. In the end, we had two completely different dishes. One bowl of crispy potato wedges, and the other a potato and slightly burnt onion hash. I would definitely make the wedges again, seeing how tasty and flavourful they were, and as fro the hash, it wasn’t the best thing I’ve eaten, but it did turn out better than I thought. If I had to do the lab again, I think I would add the onions to the wedges after they have been in the pan to a void this problem from happening again. Other than that one sidetrack, our group worked very well together and we didn’t have any other problems.

Chili Reflection

I think this lab went particularly well! Finding the recipe was a little challenging, seeing that at first we couldn’t really decide what recipe to go with, but once we came upon the Flatlander Chilli recipe, we all agreed it was the one. All we had to do was half the recipe to change the serving size of 10 to 5.  When we started the chill, we noticed that we wouldn’t have enough celery as the recipe indicated, seeing that other groups used it too, but we all decided we would just use more green pepper instead, since we were the only group to use it. After a few taste tests, the chill seemed a little bitter, and though the recipe did include 1 ml of white sugar, we added 25 ml of brown sugar to really intensify the sweet chill taste. We also added a bit more cayenne pepper to get a different kick of heat. The original recipe called for 60 ml of chill powder, and that meant our halved recipe called for 30, but that seemed like a lot of chill powder, so we only used 15 ml. We did make quite a few changes to the recipe, but it seemed to work out pretty well, seeing that the judges liked our chili the best! I really enjoyed the lab, and our cheese braid turned out to be really good, and a great accompaniment to the chili. The only thing that was slightly difficult about the making of the chili was actually just trying to figure out what to say about it to the judges! Though once we figured that out, everything went smoothly. If i were to do this lab again, I think I may use a little less spice, because personally I found it a little too spicy for me. Other than that I think this lab was awesome and hope to make it again.
