Racism is a concept that attempts to put the intangible into something tangible. Its purpose is to associate the personality, characteristics, superiority, and worth of a human being into something that one can know by just one look at the physical exterior of a person. How is that fair? One look at a person and your empathy, pity or arrogance can be justified and set in stone based on the materialistic views and bias of someone. Racism then was not any worse than racism now, however, 84 percent of Caucasian Americans believe that racism is actually over. Back in the 50’s racial discrimination was a law; the African Americans and minorities had little to none access to many advantages such as education, transportation, and even clean water fountains. Because slavery has been abolished, there are no Jim Crow laws anymore and Canada is taking in refugees, we sometimes forget that racism can come in forms that aren’t perceived as large as laws and bans but they can be as effective, especially with social platforms and the media, where opinions can be anonymous and written by anyone anywhere. If racism really is over now, how come assumptions and judgment, based on race, act as pillars in today’s society? What is worse about today’s society is that it happens right in front of us but we are blindsided by it that it doesn’t phase us anymore, we need something bold and bright for us to notice the flaws in our society – but even then, a leader in the free world who makes horrible remarks is allowed to be a role model to all of the young citizens in today’s world. Even police brutality which still exists today is even still more likely to be harsh towards African Americans as they are “perceived” to be more likely to commit a crime, which is absolutely untrue. Violence and crime are both rooted from personal experiences and specific to one’s life, one cannot match a human being from their skin color to a crime, act of violence or wrong-doing. These are all personal errors and cannot be pardoned based on skin color, and excused because of racial superiority. People make assumptions that these errors are associated with your race; which leads to the refugee’s not having a safe place to stay because wherever they go they must face adversity. There have been between 300,000 and 400,000 Syrian refugee fatalities of families that weren’t able to make it here in time. Lots of people are scared of refugees and are not fully educated on the definition of a terrorist. They do not understand the difference between fleeing your country to take refuge from a war and being a war criminal. The only way to solve racism today is to become educated because we do not have laws that discriminate anymore, things aren’t all black and white, we must learn about each other so that we can live in a diverse, pluralistic society where we are all able to co-exist and educate each other. Although coming from diverse places can cause a roadblock in forming relationships it can be very beneficial to become educated on something, it can present an opportunity for self-growth and change. If more of our communities are able to become pluralistic we, as a nation and hopefully one day world can truly be sure that Racism is over.
