Red Dress Day Reflection

On May 5th, we honour all of the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls. There is an epidemic occurring in the world right now where acts of violence are frequently harming Indigenous women and girls. Before starting this inquiry project, I had known about the injustices that missing and murdered Indigenous females get, but I never researched or learned about it in detail before. When reading different articles and watching videos about the victims and their families, my eyes were opened to these tragic cases that continue to happen today. I learned many statistics that saddened me. Indigenous females are repeatedly going missing, and many never make it home. We call those individuals Stolen Sisters. Sadly, “Indigenous females are 3 times more likely to experience acts violence than non Indigenous women”, but where our system truly fails them, is when they rarely get the justice that they deserve. “40% of murder cases go unsolved”. These statistics prove that racial injustice is still a problem in Canada. My learning experience surrounding Red Dress Day, has surprised me with how much racism and sexism still exists in our world today. Within the 94 Calls to Action, calls 50-52 are all under the section of “Equity for Aboriginal People in the Legal System”, yet the missing and murdered Indigenous females are not receiving equity in Canada’s legal system. The racism that these individuals face, all stems originally from colonization so we will not truly reconcile until we correct our past. From all of my research on this topic, I can now begin to show my allyship and help educate others about this important subject.  My hope is that someone reads my poster and is brought awareness. Sometimes it can be difficult to deep dive into such sad and tragic events, but by doing so I now have more empathy and I can become a better ally by standing with and fighting for the stolen. sisters.
