Final Product of Adaptive Tech for Tim

This picture sums up my experience because I think that it’s really cool and special to see Tim using something that my group created.

This is a picture that explains what we did. It shows how we started with a complicated remote and it shows that we needed to design a new one.

This picture shows what we designed and made a simplified remote because it shows how we came up with our own creative way to try and help Tim

My Experience

I found this experience very unique because I had never done anything like this in the past, where I actually got to connect with someone and try to create something for them to make their days a little bit easier. It was inspiring to me because I felt like I was doing something important that could really benefit someone instead of doing something that was not important and boring. It made me feel good to know that I could help someone else and I think it was a good use of my learning.

My Connections

I connected with many different people through this project. I connected with other classmates, Tim, Nicola, the maker space, and our group went on the makers making change website to get some ideas. I found it really helpful to make connections because everyone has something different that they are good at, and everyone has something that they can offer.

What we Made

Our group designed a prototype of what we think is a great design and layout of what the perfect simplified remote would be for Tim. We only added the buttons that we knew Tim would want, and we added them as switches because after asking Tim questions, we decided that switches would be the easiest thing for Tim to use.

New Skills

Through this project I have gained many new skills such as designing. I learnt how to design, by using Tinker Cad to design our simplified remote prototype. I learnt how a 3d printer works. I learnt how the 3d printer works when we printed our prototype because I watched as the remote printed. I learnt communication skills because I had to communicate with my group members and share my thoughts and opinions. I learnt creative thinking skills because I had to think outside of the box and persevere through problem in a creative way. I learnt critical thinking skills because I had to think about how the remote would fit Tims needs not just how the remote would work.

My Learning goal

My learning goal was to learn something new and help Tim. I think that I met my goal because I learnt multiple new skills that I can use in my day to day life. I think our simplified remote prototype has the potential to help Tim because I think that we came up with a really smart and creative design. So I am proud of myself for accomplishing my learning goals.

The Collaboration

The collaboration went really well because I like that I got to hear other peoples ideas, and thoughts on the projects.  I found it really helpful to have others to work on it with. When I got stuck they had solutions, when they couldn’t get a material I could. Everyone had different skills and I thought that my group balanced each other out nicely.

What Went Well

I felt successful with this project and I think that is because I completed a lot of research. It was very important that I researched about Huntington’s disease before I even stared designing because I had to make sure that I understood what Tim had and what some of his challenges could be. Our group worked well together and we stayed focused on our task. We came up with an idea that I think has the potential to really help Tim and we tried our best.

What we Could Improve on

We could improve on making a version that actually worked and functioned. We really struggled to find a way so that it would connect with Tims TV. Next time we could see if we could connect with someone that knows how to wire a remote such as an electrician and create something that would connect with Tims TV.

How I Felt

During the time that we were working on this I felt inspired. I was inspired because we were given a challenge and I wanted to complete it. After I did my research I felt accomplished because I felt that I was informed and had a good understanding of what Huntington’s was and how it works. When I was designing my remote I felt proud of my group and myself and our design. I Also feel good about myself because our design has the potential to help someone.

How we helped Tim in the end

In the end our group members felt that it was important that our outcome could help Tim in some way so, all together we purchased  a simplified remote that we think resembles our prototype and would help Tim.

  1. You did such a great job sharing the whole journey of how you were able to help Tim deal with some of the difficulties he has with having Huntington’s disease. I am super proud of you and your group. Great work telling the story and the transformation from a complicated TV remote to something simple and usable. I am glad to hear that you feel you were successful in acquiring the needed research and collaborating with your group. Looks like you developed a lot of skills through this process. Great work! Would you mind if I shared out some/all of this post?
