“The Crucible” Project + Reflection
How has the exploration of “The Crucible,” deepen your understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others, and the world?
With “The Crucible” I have been able to see different people’s opinions depending on their social standings. “The Crucible” shows that what someone may think is right, another person may find it extremely unacceptable. What people define themselves can be greatly changed by other’s opinions and expectations of the said person. With identity, people want to be able to fit in and to be accepted into society. They want to be able to be “well known” and have a “good reputation” among other people. There are people throughout the world who still live in their own little bubble and don’t accept other people of other faith and culture. People then who are part of these communities and want to express themselves in different ways feel oppressed to do so and are forced to follow the status-quo or to put on a mask to hide their true selves. In the end, I think that “The Crucible” shows that the world needs to learn how to broadens it’s views on society as a whole and teach people that there isn’t always one way. People should be more open minded about other people’s beliefs and lifestyles and realize that there isn’t “right” way to live and people shouldn’t be judged without real proof.
How and why have you responded to, “The Crucible” in a personal, creative, and critical way?
For “The Crucible” showed the mindset that people used to have in the past. We can compare it to today and we can see that people have or have not changed to this mindset. Today there are still many people who won’t accept other points of view or think that they’re the one who’s right and everyone else’s opinion is wrong. I think that “The Crucible” shows the extreme side of the negative affects of someone who has more power and word over others. Since everyone would trust the girls’ word without hesitating, there were many people who had their lives lost. This is a key example of people being lead blindly. I also think that personally, “The Crucible” displays the lack in personal self confidence. People would easily buy into each other’s pressure and submit to them. An example is Abigail’s control over Mary and how she almost immediately got Mary back on her side again. With this, it shows the lack of self independence and the fear of other’s. The last thing is that it also shows that people are unable to really learn the consequences of something unless they really experience it. At first, the accusations were to just get rid of people that they didn’t like, but then it slowly turned into them accusing more people to save themselves from death. In general, I think that “The Crucible” outlines the need for learning lessons and weighing out your morals and values for which is more important.

Silent Video Ballad Poem- Pip
There once was a pup
Whose name was Pip
Their favourite thing to do was skip
He wanted to be a support puppy
To help the blind as a buddy
Pip went to test their worth,
Wanting to join the club
For the best puppies on earth
He jumped all around
Prancing, and dancing like a cub
The door, he finally found
They tested his height
To see if he could pass
To be the perfect guide puppy
Hopefully not the last
Reluctantly she let him in,
As his ears just barely reached
Nodding towards the door
Pip nearly preached
As skipped across floor
He wanted to be the very best
Just like the LEGEND Ace
But Pip wasn’t like all the rest
It was something he would have to face
He was a small little pup,
But he knew he had the stuff
To make it to the top
Without any bluffs
Yet all those around
Doubted little Pip,
They sneered and jeered
As if he were a clown
Sending his confidence into the ground
Then, it finally came
This time, it wouldn’t be a game
It was the day of the test
He couldn’t risk getting into a mess
Pip wanted to be the very best
Just like the LEGEND Ace
But Pip wasn’t like all the rest
It was something he would have to face
He knew he had the skills
Because he worked hard
Just hope he wouldn’t get the chills
And run into a bar
But as he admired her
He stumbled and tripped
Crashing down
The evaluator nearly flipped
Kicked him out
And left to pout
He frowned as he looked
Towards the Legend Ace
And overlooked
The others with glee on their face
As they were given their medal
And praised by the others
As their skills were next level
They had a bond like brothers
But outside Pip saw
A lady, lost
Behind her a claw
Filled with dirt and ready to toss
He bolted towards her
Under the gates
His fur blurred
As the others raced
To see what had occurred
Taking her purse,
He lead her away
Towards safety
And to another day
Across on the sidewalk
The others had seen
Pip, and his bravery
They were quite keen
With smiles about
They praised with shouts
Pip was given the cape
Of the Legend Ace
For Pip wanted to be the very best
Just like the Legend Ace
But Pip wasn’t like the rest
He has passed the test
The Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald- Ballad
How is loss the central theme of the poem? Why is it important to remember these men? How is the environment essential? What is the poem warning us as individuals?
The ballad, “The Edmund Fitzgerald” by Gordon Lightfoot expresses the themes of loss and environment. The poem is about a freighter boat that sinks during it’s journey across Lake Superior. The cause of the boat’s sinking is from the from the early storms on the lake: ” The good ship and crew was a bone to be chewed / When the gales of November came early” (Lightfoot, 7-8). It shows how the death of twenty-nine people could affect so many more. There were many people who went to go pray for the sailors in the maritime sailors’ cathedral. Even though there are some people that may not have any connection to the sailors, people would still care about the lives that have been lost: “The church bell chimed till it rang twenty-nine times / for each man on the Edmund Fitzgerald” (Lightfoot, 51-52). They would respect the lives of the people who were lost and help the families and others who were affected. The power of the church bell shows the importance of the event and how everyone is paying their respects towards the families.
The environment is a key factor in the poem because it caused the boat to sink. The environment demonstrates the consequences of people who aren’t ready for what is to come to them. As the sailors were unaware of the storm that would be coming early, they didn’t prepare for it: “And a wave broke over the railing / And every man knew, as the captain did too, / T’was the witch of November come stealin'” (Lightfoot, 18-20). The message being conveyed is that one should prepare well for long trips, as they won’t know what would be coming for them. Next time, you should be prepared for anything that might happen, and, try to foresee what will come so you’ll have a better plan.
