1.)The man fishes at night because there are more mullets out at night. He fishes alone because it is calming, and he finds it exhilarating and different from his normal life. This leads to the conflict because no one could help him if something bad happened. It was also too dark to tell if the the swirling thing in the water was a mullet or a ray.

2.) Some examples of foreshadowing are:
-When the he ties the noose around his wrist (foreshadowing death)
-When he mentions that the water is dangerous at night
-The man decides that he will not go far
-He saved the baby porpoise
-The sardines were scared
-He looked in the net for sting rays

3.) Complicating incident- The man decieded not to fish unless he found two or more swirls
Crisis- The man gets pulled into the water
Climax- When he made the U shape with the rope, and was free
Resolution- the man let the mullet go
Ending- Happy ending

4.) Primitive – natural aspects of the world, living to survive
Civilized – working, but enjoying life

Man’s dominance over the primitive world

Cosway- barrier between civilized world and primitive world. The barrier doesn’t always work.

5.) The man learned how it feels to be on the other side of being trapped. That is why he freed the mullet. He was humbled.

6.) Figurative Language:

Simile: “A school of sardines surfaced suddenly, skittering along like drops of mercury.”

Personification: “Behind him, the lights glowed in the cheerful room….”

Personification : “…the good, tough, honest wood”

Equilibrium- A state of balance, one force is not stronger than the other

Phosphorescence- Luminescence that is caused by the absorption of radiations
