Week 7 – Pre-Calc 11

This blog post flew under my radar unfortunately as my last day of classes before spring break was Wednesday and in all the commotion for packing, it was overlooked. In spite of this, I feel that I’m even better equipped now to write on my subject of choice. That subject is factoring. Even though I covered this subject in week 5, I feel it is still important to come around to again.

Everything we are working on currently requires factoring, and being at ease with it is extremely helpful.

For a quick review, we use the acronym CDPUE (Can divers pee underwater easily) to remember the five main types of factoring: Common, Difference of Squares, Pattern, Easy, Ugly.

Being able to tell what category the system being factored fall under is integral to understanding and navigation the world of quadratics with ease.

For instance: I have if I have the x^2 + 5x + 6 I can deduce it falls under the category EASY because it is easily factorable

All I have to do is figure out that 5×1 has a sum of 6 and I know it is easy. Reading simple signs such as this takes a bit of practice but becomes a super useful skill to have.

From this information, I can create (x+2) (x+3) and I’m in business.

Here is a great worksheet I found that can help you practice getting better a recognizing how an equation needs to be factored faster: http://pgdlai.weebly.com/uploads/4/8/4/6/48464869/factoring.pdf

Thanks for your time and happy factoring
