Podcast:

My Talking Points in Our Podcast:

  • Like for example, the Indigenous creation story vs. The Christian or Catholic creation story.

  • Another story is Traplines by Eden Robinson. The main character of Traplines, Will, lives in an abusive and unsettling household. He was abused by his older brother but the brother was abused by his father, so it was like a chain reaction. Will is asked to stay with his English teacher and her husband. Will refuses their offer because he felt needed by his family. What kept him wanting to stay was the traplines he checks with his father which was like his happiest memories with his father. As quoted in the story “How’d you like to stay with us? He says, very quietly. “Sure,” I say. “But I got to go back on Tuesday. We got to check the traplines again.'” (p15) We can relate this back to our question since it was a chain reaction to the abuse. So the behavior of Will’s brother was caused by his father.
  •  yeah and these influences can affect our behavior, actions, and thinking towards people.

My Response

  • Our group had chosen the question, “how do beliefs, ethics, or values influence different people’s behavior?” With our question decided, we separated the question with each member in our group to tackle individually then worked together to edit and create a script for our final podcast. We used the stories Truth about Stories, Traplines, Mermaids, and Tulluq Story to answer our chosen question. In conclusion, we learned that our beliefs and values are influences by the environment around us. Our thinking towards other people can also be influenced by our environment.

The world is viewed in many different ways. Our views and beliefs are influenced by our family and friends, our background, social media, and communities. Depending on how we grew up can change our world views. Whether we were raised in a wealthy family or poor family, whether we had food on our tables or just enough to survive, religion, and race. World views can also be stories. There are several stories that have been passed down through the ages about how the world was created. Each story is different from the other for example: The Woman Who Fell from the Sky and the story of Adam and Eve. The Woman Who Fell from the Sky is about a curious pregnant woman who fell from the sky and with the help of animals, created the earth. Adam and Eve is a story about a paradise where the two resided till they disobeyed God’s only wish, to not eat the fruit from the forbidden tree. This caused them to be banished from the paradise and sent to what we know as earth. Among all the different views we have on the world and how it was created, we believe our own views whichever they may be, but seeing over views can open your eyes to new knowledge.

As a class assignment, we were set into pairs of two. Our instructions were to create a scene from The Girl Who Fell from the Sky. This small activity showed how each pair interoperated the story, or what scene stood out the most to them. My partner, Anna and I chose to do the scene were Otter has just risen from the depths of the ocean to retrieve mud for Charm. This scene was the one that stood out to use the most. Other pairs chose the same one as us and others chose different scenes like: Charm falling from the hole she had dug, and Charm’s twins who created the earth’s beauties.
