By Kitty Kat on April 1st, 2017

Riverside Secondary is a school, with a dense student population. Good grades leak through report cards, just like the students that own them. Despite the thick walls, sheer curiosity and pain filter through.

It’s finales and midterm week. Pressure resonating from: parents, teachers, and themselves. Stress is not hard to find. Students are swarmed with homework, and upcoming adult responsibilities. The millennials leave no room for failure. This leads them to have issues with anxiety and depression.

Although, the fellow students are quite supportive towards each other. The school creates clubs to help the community, and students. It is a welcoming environment. The teachers are always opened for emotional talks. This helps deal with the day-to-day stress in student’s lives. Some students communicate with their parents, or friends. Some  are more prone to unhealthy situations.

Behind the mask of well-rounded students; some hide drugs and alcohol behind their backs. To escape from reality and stress, unsupervised parties are held. Weed and beer are littered all over kitchen counters and tables, accompanied by rowdy rap music.  Gordon Check (grade eleven student at Riverside Secondary) labelled the get-togethers as, “time to have fun.”

The so called, “Vape” is carried around more. They are small rectangular boxes, with tubes on the top. It comes with artificially flavoured liquid, for smoking.

Homo Sapiens have create these communication devices called, “Cellphones”; which have add to the negative tendencies. The metal, glowing, boxes display status out to the public. The Internet, that comes with these devices, seem to challenge people’s emotions. There are also impossible expectations are unreal. It is unfair to all species, including the ones away form Earth.

A student from Riverside Secondary, who has chosen to stay anonymous, states: “It has increased my anxiety levels and self-doubt. Change has happened, but there is still many things left.”

The biggest concern, striking Riverside’s core, is the new generations. There needs to be a way to focus on the emotional and physical health. Classes, possibly for a week, dedicated to the wellbeing. In generally, people are becoming more animated- don’t express what they feel. They use electronic to escape, and drugs and alcohol to self-medicate. If schools make classes including self doubt, etc; students could feel more comfortable with themselves.

In the big picture, Riverside Secodary is a wonderful school; filled with aspiring students. It is a great facility of education.

  1. Maebel – good on you choosing this assignment. Well done overall! However, I think your alien reporter would be more confused by some behaviour and items, which should be reflected in his/her article.
