My Understanding of A Private Experience:

A Private Experience by feminist, Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. The story is about a conflict that started by an Igbo Christian man running over a Koran with his car which ended up in a violent riot between the Hausa Muslims and Igbo Christians. The title of the short story is the crying fit the Hausa woman has during the riot, Chika’s described her crying fit as a private experience that doesn’t involve Chika, “The woman’s crying is private, as though she is carrying out a necessity that involves no one else.” The story is about Chika and the Hausa woman who is forced to be with each other for a long time in the building to hide from the rioters outside of the building. Chika being stuck in there can see the more vulnerable side to the Hausa woman. The mind map shows all of the main ideas from the story. First, there is a rosary ring that Chika wears throughout the story which is a symbol of faith and is related to Christianity. Another example of a symbol is the Hausa woman’s scarf which is a symbol of her Muslim beliefs but can also be seen as a symbol of grace. The crying woman is meant to represent the scene where the Hausa woman has a breakdown after talking about how her baby was all alone at home during the riot. The fourth image is meant to represent one of the overall themes which the faith of both characters has for both of their religions. Faith is also used to show the contrast of how faith can make people do good and can connect people. It can also cause us vs them the relationship between conflicting religious groups such as the riots showed the story. The image of the abandoned gas station represents the physical setting of the story. The images used to represent the riot are the conflict and also the antagonist of this story. The story has two of the overall themes that are represented in the mind map which are faith and the conflict that appears when two conflicting belief systems bud heads.
