Women’s right

In 1930s the primary responsibility of women was the maintenance of home and family. Most women were expected to get married and leave the labour force as soon as they could. There were a limited number of jobs considered acceptable for middle-class women. That being said, it was evident that women are able to take on the same kind of labour work that men had been doing before the war. In the Second World War, because the man had to go to war, there is little work force, so women were encouraging to do labour jobs such as welders, drillers and punch-press or machine operators. The top left of my drawing is a representation of women’s and men’s equality over the course of the war.

Human’s right

In 1941, Hitler has adopted the “Final solution” which is a genocide against Jewish people. They were shipped to the concentration camps those who were young, week or sick. When they arrived there, they were immediately killed in gas chambers. The ones who are able to work they were keep them until they starvated or disease weakened them. In Asia, Liberators of Japanese Prisoners of War experience war crimes: including Mass killings, human experimentation, famine, torture and forced labour. Because of these horrible events, people start considering the issue of human rights, and decide to make a change for the better; such as in 1997, The Canadian Human Rights Act is created to protect themselves against harassment or discrimination when based on one or more grounds of discrimination such as race, age and sexual orientation.

Multiculturalism

In 1896, prime minister Larrier promoted immigration through advertising campaigns. They promoted Canada as the “Last Best West”. This resulted in an increase of immigrants of different ethnic backgrounds. Because Canadians were ethnocentric, it caused a lot of discrimination. All through out the 1900s, different ethnic groups struggled with the Canadian government to receive an apology and compensation for their suffering. Such as 2008 when Stephen Harper formally apologized to Chinese immigrants and paid $20,000 to all surviving head tax payers or their spouses. This shows Canada’s perspective of wanting to move forward from past mistakes, to build a better multicultural future.

Quebec Nationalism

During the depression Quebec develop a new party call the “Quebec National” lead by Maurice Duplessis. He promoted Quebec Nationalism (culture and languages) and blamed English minority for the economic problem in the province. However, he didn’t improve any of the issues, such as the social insurance programs, publicly own companies, improved working conditions and a system of farm credits. Nevertheless, he had the support of the Roman Catholic church and the locals, and remain premier until 1995.This shows the strong national feeling of the Quebecois people. I choose the symbol of the fleurs-de-lis because it became the Quebec flag, and was made during the time of Maurice Duplessis’ appointment and peak of Quebec Nationalism.

Reconciliation

After the bombing of Pearl Harbor and invasion of Hong Kong in 1941 by the Japanese, a large amount of people in Canada have a bad view towards Japanese people. This affected the Canadian government, causing them pubic pressure and created The War Measures Act in 1942.The forced all Japanese Canadian to move to the Okanagan Valley no matter they lived in Canada. Finally, in 1947, the government cancelled The War Measures Act and they apologized and gave $21,000 to all Japanese Canadians affected. The Canadian government also restored the Canadian Citizenship of Japanese Canadians who were deported.
