“He took one last drag on his cigarette and snapped it away. Then with that faint, fleeting smile playing about his lips, he faced the firing squad; erect and motionless, proud and disdainful, Walter Mitty the Undefeated, inscrutable to the last.” Standing there still as ice, he could feel the sweat dripping from his forehead as the firing squad loads their guns. He watched every single movement of each soldier, as they prep their guns ready to aim and shoot right through his body. Everything was in slow motion. Walter Mitty trembled, as he looks up to the sky, and desperately starts to pray. “Dear God, please give me one last chance,” he pleaded, as the head of the team yelled, “ready?” “BANG!” Walter expecting pain in his body, slowly looked down, and there a squealing K9 unit laying on his feet, which seemed to be a German Shepherd, had a deep wound in its throat, and looked into Mitty’s eyes.
The squealing noise continued, “Walter! Stop stepping on the poor dog’s feet!” Mrs. Mitty yelled from across the street. Walter jumps and quickly releases his foot from the dog’s paw. The dog was loosely tied up to a fence. It barked louder and louder each time Walter made a move. He was terrified of an animal he could not control.“It’s o-okay, g-g-good boy!” Walter stuttered, as he slowly backed away. The dog kept running towards him, ready to charge. The look in the dog’s eyes was horrifying. It was ready to shred Mitty into a thousand pieces. The tied up leash was getting looser each time the dog attempted to break free. Walter starts to run as fast as possible. “Where are you going?!” Mrs. Mitty yelled, as she watched her husband run for his dear life. Walter’s breath increased faster and faster, and he finally approaches an alleyway, but then quickly realizes it was a dead end. There was nowhere to escape. Walter Mitty stood there, hopelessly listening to the dog growl, as it slowly approached him.
…”The great lion tamer Walter Mitty!” The crowd cheers with excitement, as the ringmaster announces the next big act. Walter Mitty was standing in the middle of a big tent, made up of many colours. He was wearing a red tux, and he held a long whip in his hand. There were four lions sitting in a big cage, with the look of hunger in their eyes. Then a piece of crumpled paper hit Walter’s face. Walter unfolds the paper. It was a poster of a circus “Moscow’s Beast Tamer,” written in bold red letters. Mitty attempts to scan the crowd of people through the bright lights. The look of excitement in the crowd’s faces filled Mitty with adrenaline. The cages opened, and the crowd got louder. The four beasts ready to feed charge at Mitty in the speed of light. Suddenly, the feeling of butterflies in Mitty’s stomach changed into confidence. Mitty stood firm on his ground with the whip in his hand. “Stop!” Mitty said, as he whipped his whip to create distance. The crowd went wild, “Mitty the great! Mitty the great!” they screamed jumping out of their seats. Four giant cats were listening to Mitty. Soon, he was making the lions jump over objects, and dance on their hein legs. It was the lions that the people came to see, but the attention was on the star of the show, Walter Mitty.
