This 2- PART Lesson is to be completed in the 4 hours of “Home study” time that you have this week.
Successful fashion designers need to be fashion illustrators. The key to a good fashion drawing is sketching the body correctly. When you are drawing clothes, if the body underneath is not correct, than the clothes also wont be drawn in correct proportions. Therefor it is important to learn how to draw a fashion croquis.
The word croquis actually means “sketch” in French. A croquis is a sketch of a fashion figure intended for showing clothing designs in a dramatic way. It is a tool for communicating a design. When drawing clothes, you want to present them in the most appealing way possible and the fashion croquis presents that foundation that gives clothes their shape and shows them in the best light.
A fashion figure is different than a regular figure drawings because it is an idealized figure with longer legs, often thinner hips and torso however body shapes can be rounded out rather than thinned, and are usually given slightly smaller head to reduce the attention on the person. This kind of figure makes clothes look more dramatic and big enough to be the first to catch the eye of the viewer. The figure is just what the clothes are put on, but the clothes are the most important aspect of a croquis drawing. A regular figure is usually around 8 units – eight heads from the top of the head to the ankles and fashion figure can be 9 to 11 heads long.
In this activity you are to practice drawing croquis figures. Once you have your first fashion croquis template, you will be able to use it for tracing and drawing clothes over the traced template over and over again.
You are to draw two SEPERATE and DIFFERENT fashion figure drawings.
Each of the two drawings will be marked out of 10 MARKS
Criteria for evaluation :
Don’t stress, just practice. Instead of stressing over getting the perfect sketches, just start where you are and practice. … Don’t worry about putting clothing on the figures yet. Just focus on getting two different figure drawings, perhaps in two different poses that you can use as templates to draw clothing on. Focus on developing a figure with proportions and a style of your own.
There are TWO sources for giving you detailed instruction and practice drawing the fashion figure – a blog site and a youtube video. Please visit BOTH for full tutorial on this skill.

Since the purpose of Croquis illustration is to showcase clothing you are to try your hand at this. Have a look at how these Fashion Illustrators use their croquis figure as a template UNDER A CLEAN PAGE to design a clothing item on a fashion figure (below). Practice first. Don’t stress, just try it a few times, rather than just once.

You should draw any clothing item that you want to draw on your Croquis.
Evaluation criteria includes these important points:
2. Make the clothing item bolder than the figure, so that it stands out more.
3. Use a PENCIL FIRST
4. Make every line CRISP and CLEAR (use your eraser to get rid of sketchy lines)
5. Draw WRINKLES where they should occur (ie under arms, knees, neck, ..)
6. Use either pencil crayon or watercolour paints – whichever you are most comfortable using well.
7. SHADE some areas with darker shades – do NOT COLOUR a clothing item all the same shade!
8. SATURATE the colour -bold colour stands out more.
9. Draw the figure head, hands and feet with less detail, however do include them
10. FINELINE in all DETAILS.
