DRAWING PRACTICE-April 7

Hi! 😊    I hope you are staying inside and keeping your family smiling!

We are going to spend some time working on some basic drawing skills.  Many of you are home with very few art supplies so I figured this is a great opportunity to practice basic drawing techniques that always pay off when one wants to make art.   I plan to throw some imagination exercises in with the skill building so that you work that part of your brain as well.

Lesson #1:

Today I’d like you to hunt around your home and collect a variety of pencils. Test each of them to see if some have softer lead than others and therefor make darker strokes or lighter strokes.  Hopefully you can find at least a couple of different softnesses of pencils. Remember which are the dark ones and which are light.

This video tells you the difference in pencil types.  You DON”T HAVE TO HAVE A SET OF PENCILS LIKE THIS!! But its good to know why different pencils are beneficial.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0tV2DtIBJC0

Goal #1:  Know your Drawing Pencils

Once you’ve collected and tested your pencils try making a variety of different lines with them   Not all lines are equal. Subtle shifts in the width and darkness of your lines will create a dynamic, visually interesting drawing. Controlling the kind of mark you put down can be tricky in the beginning, but with practice you will be able to create a variety of marks that work together to make a cohesive image.

Goal #2  Draw with 3 different Pencil Positions

Experiment with different pencil grades and with holding the pencil at different angles.  That’s right, hold your pencils I different ways. 1. Writing position, 2. Overhand position, and 3. Extended overhand position.   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXPzwGkL8zY     TRY ALL THREE!

Goal #3:   Draw a DOG using the skeleton as your guide when drawing an animate object.

With your pencils and holding positions try drawing a dog.

Check out the blog that will show you how to draw a dog.  Note how you use the SKELETON of the dog to help you draw the body.  That’s a fundamental to drawing anything living.  Follow the process on the blog and draw a dog.

How did you do following the blog?   Email me a photo of your work.

If you have a dog at home perhaps you might draw another dog – yours!  Use the method on the blog to help you.  Sketch in the skeleton as your guide.  Write your dog’s name under the drawing.

Let me see how you did – Email me a photo of your drawing (s).

Rate your progress on each of the three goals for today’s lesson:

That’s it!   Stay well and keep smiling.
