Therefore, have fun!
Shortcuts may be needed to succeed!
To migrate during this weekend
On behalf of you

The theme of this found poem is based on all the emails I received when online school began. The week before we have been informed on how we will have help and guidance throughout this change, they knew how stressed some would be so they made sure they could help others. We’re told we will take baby steps in order to adjust. I really enjoyed making this found poem because I realized how far we came since the beginning and how I have learned so much more about technology.
In this story, a 16-year-old boy gets stabbed and realizes why he got stabbed and learns something every time somebody is near him. He didn’t learn too much from the first man except for that being drunk makes people see the world differently. Next, a young couple walks near him and notices him however since he is a Royal he doesn’t want to get hurt by the other gang the Guardians, therefore, they apologize and leave. After that, he becomes very frustrated with his jacket because he didn’t get stabbed as Andy, he got stabbed cause he’s a Royal. So then he took off the jacket so he dies as Andy.
What is the setting of the story?
In an alley, raining, night
Who is the protagonist?
Andy
Who is Laura? Why is she important to Andy?
Laura seems to be Andy’s girlfriend; she is important to Andy because she is like her best friend and he feels bad cause he left her to go get cigarettes.
Who are the people that walk through the alley?
The people wo walked through the alley were a drunk man who didn’t do anything, a couple who saw Andy but didn’t want to get involved so they did not help him cause he’s a royal.
Explain some reasons why people do not help Andy?
One man thinks Andy is drunk and just laying in the rain, the couple did not help him because they saw his jacket which said he was a royal.
What does his jacket symbolize?
That he is part of a gang called the Royals and that the other gang the guardians hate the royals, however nobody cares that he is Andy.
At what point does Andy realize why he was stabbed?
Andy realizes he got stabbed when the couple Angela and Freddie see him but will not help him cause he is wearing a jacket with the name royals on it, the couple does not want to get involved with the guardians and the royals.
What is the climax of the story?
I think the climax is when the couple finds Andy but is too scared cause he’s a royal.
How does the police officer react to Andy’s death? Why does he react this way?
The officer didn’t care, he pronounced him dead then saw his jacket and wrote something down on his notepad.
A) Questions
What was Dave Conroy doing out in the wilderness? (motivation)
Dave Conroy’s motivation in the wilderness was to trap and hunt animals for their fur than to travel further to sell the fur.
At what point does the reader know the protagonist is in serious trouble and not likely to
make it to MacMoran’s cabin? (plot)
The reader knows the protagonist is in serious trouble when Dave falls into the water and can’t dry himself off because his fingers are too frozen to light a match.
What three critical mistakes did Conroy make? What are some of the things he could
have done to prevent himself from freezing? (plot)
Once Dave had fallen into the water he shouldn’t have kept going, instead, it would have been better if he found a spot to camp for the night so he could dry off and continue the next day. The fact that Dave just kept going even tho he had hypothermia could have killed him and was not a good risk to take.
Determine the elements of plot in this story: exposition, complicating incident, 3 crises,
climax, and the denouement.
In the exposition, we met Dave, learned what he was doing in the wilderness and where he was planning to go. The complicating incident is when we discovered he’s heading downhill and that he should have stopped and camped out for the night instead. The 3 crises are when dave falls into the water than when he refuses to stop and continues his journey and finally when he attempts to light a match but is unable because his fingers are frozen therefore he cannot dry himself off. The climax is when Dave discovers he has hypothermia and is too stubborn so he continues on the journey. The denouement is when Dave gave up and let himself freeze to death by laying in the snow.
Describe the setting – how does the setting affect the plot and the theme of the story?
What is the theme – write a theme statement for this story.
The setting takes place somewhere in Alberta Canada with a lot of mountains and snow in the area, the setting completely changes the story because if there wasn’t any snow then Dave wouldn’t have froze than gave up and died in the snow.
The theme is that you shouldn’t force yourself to do things you are unable to do or that you will not be able to fix, you must always take care of yourself so things like this don’t happen.
Find one example of symbolic setting (concrete place that represents something abstract)
and explain its meaning.
The cabin is a symbolic setting because it is somewhere he wanted to go and have his ending.
Quote four images from the story that make effective comparisons (figurative language:
simile, metaphor, and personification)
Personification: “set the forest moaning beside him. ” (Page 2-3)
Metaphore: “the cold was an old man’s fingers feeling craftily through his clothes” (Page 1)
Simile: “like a parade of skeletons climbing up the mountainside ” (Page 3)
Simile: “He was beginning to feel like a ghost on an abandoned planet ” (Page 1)

What is the article about?
This article is about the many inequalities in women’s hockey, it mentions how women are getting paid way less than men to play in their highest level of hockey when men are getting paid a significant amount more, most women who play in the highest level for women still need a second job in order to pay their bills. Also about the fact that women’s hockey has definitely grown since the beginning however women’s hockey is still way smaller than men’s and isn’t treated with the same amount of respect. Female hockey players are not given the same amount of opportunities, advertisement or funding as men’s hockey.
Who does it involve?
The article involves female hockey players and athletes as well as Hockey Canada.
Why did you choose this article?
I chose this article cause I always wondered why I never really got to see women playing hockey on the tv unless it was the Olympics. I always watched the NHL games with my dad and I didn’t know why there were no women, some may say it’s because it’s too dangerous for them going against these 200-pound men. I always would think but it’s their choice if they are good enough and they want to play in the NHL they should get the chance, cause there are still some fairly small men in the NHL and they seem to be doing just fine, so why can’t the women join too. People always say that nobody wants to watch women’s hockey because there is no hitting and “it’s not as entertaining”. But the thing that doesn’t make sense to me is why aren’t women allowed to hit in hockey at any age and if you do its a penalty but in boys, it’s not as big of a deal.
How does this news article relate to the story we are reading- The Friday Everything Changed?
The article relates to the story (The Friday Everything Changed) because in both women are not allowed or are not asked to do something they are perfectly able to do. Although the stories are different they do have similarities. In the story, the girls were never chosen to carry the water buckets and it was always the boys, the boys got to miss class while the girls never did. This is similar to how female hockey players do not get paid close to the same amount men do, because “they aren’t good enough”, in both stories the women never get a chance to do what they want to do. In the story, the girls eventually get told they can get the water after having to fight with the boys, which is similar to how women’s hockey has for sure grown but it has taken a lot of time and a lot of effort and people.
Comprehension:
The boys are upset because they have been dreaming of getting to carry the water bucket since grade one, it is like an honour to them if you get selected.
2. What strategies do the boys use to pressure the girls to give in? How do the girls react?
The boys tried many things such as not letting them play softball, attacking them and having guys tell them it’s not even that fun and the weather is cold. The girls did not let this stop them, they did not give up and they kept trying.
Elements of Fiction:
The seat mate of Alma is telling the story and she finds Alma very brave, all the girls seem to really like Mrs.Ralston and they hope she lets the girls take the water.
At the School and in the field, it takes place in Canada in the 1800s-1900s, because they say Eh and it is very cold. Person/the girls vs Society/the boys, because the girls are wondering why only the men are strong enough and why they are only allowed to take the water.
The protaganist is the girls because they are the main characters espescially Alma, they have to fight against the boys so that tehy can also get the water.
On this Friday everything changed because Mrs.Ralston told two girls that they can go get the water this time, the message is that girls used to be compared to the guys and weren’t and “couldn’t” do what the boys did. The author’s message is to fight for your rights and that girls should be allowed to do anything a boy can do.

For my community connections project, I chose to interview a 6-time Olympic female athlete with 5 gold medals for Canada’s hockey team, the first women to score in a professional men’s league, IIHF Hockey Hall of Famer and Hockey Hall of Famer, Hayley Wickenheiser! Today Hayley Wickenheiser is the assistant director of player development for the Toronto maple leafs, as well as a student at the medical school at the University of Calgary.
Hayley Wickenheiser is a well renown female in the hockey community, Hayley has always been a great inspiration to me, and I am so glad I had the chance to interview her for this project. What really inspires me about Hayley is that even though she had a big career in hockey it doesn’t mean that you have to play hockey forever, after retiring she pursued another dream of going to medical school. I’ve met Hayley Wickenheiser a few times at her hockey tournaments I’ve been in, meeting her for the first I didn’t quite know who she was but as I grew up, I began to learn the things she has accomplished. Hayley Wickenheiser has changed the Women’s hockey game so much and helped it grow, therefore, I wanted to choose Hayley.
The questions I asked Hayley after asking if she’d be willing to answer a few questions which are…
Why are you passionate about playing hockey?
Her answer was “I was passionate about playing hockey because I loved every time you stepped on the ice you could do something different. It’s a creative game, it’s never the same thing twice. I’m not the kind of person who could just do the same thing over and over again, I like being in a team sport and I like to try different things.”
What obstacles have you faced to get you where you are today?
“As far as obstacles I have faced a lot, like verbal abuse from parents and kids from other teams when I was growing up, I got cut when I was in midget AAA boys because I was a girl the coach said he couldn’t handle having a girl on the team. Countless numbers of times where people couldn’t respect having a female on the ice, they don’t think you’re as smart and good as the guys are and basically proving myself every time I stepped on the Ice.”

What advice would you pass on to someone interested in having a career and impact in hockey?
“The advice I have is for people is to become the master of your craft, if you really want to be great at hockey as a player you have to practice, you have to train, you have to watch the best players in the world and study what they do, you need to be like a sponge soak up everything you can. Outwork everyone else, having a good work ethic and attitude will take you a long long way I find, and a lot of people aren’t willing to put in the work that it takes. Find mentors, learn the best from the people that are willing to help you, ask for help, try not to listen to the critical advice form others and be your own best friend those are really important things when times get tuff.”

If you could go back to before you joined team Canada is there anything you would change?
“If I could go back to before I made team Canada is there anything I would change, short answer no. I wouldn’t change anything that I did, sometimes I would of learned to be more patient as a younger player/athlete. But for the most part, I wouldn’t change a thing, I’m very happy with how the things worked out.”
Who did you look up to the most while growing up?
“I looked up to Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier the most when I was playing as a young player, I loved the Edmonton Oilers of the 80s and everything that they stood for and how they played the game and I’d studied how they’d played and watched their game then go out on the outdoor rink and pretend that I was them. I didn’t have any female hockey players, I thought I was the only girl in the world playing hockey when I started.
In this interview I learned that you need to really love and commit to the hockey if you want to pursue in it, you need to stay determined and focused. You need to stay positive and push yourself, you need to study the game and practice all the time. Hockey is a very creative and technical sport, in order to get far you need to have a good attitude and stay positive. I also learned that hockey has changed so much, and women are now more respected but still not as much as men. Hayley Wickenheiser is a great inspiration for anyone especially girls who want to play hockey.
Thank you so much, Hayley, I’m so glad you answered my questions and I learned so much!
