Neuron Function – Psych 12

Sensory Neuron –

The sensory neuron is nerve cells within the nervous system responsible for converting external stimuli from the organism’s environment into internal electrical impulses.

Interneuron

The interneuron transmits impulses between other neurons.

Motor-neuron

This neuron carries signals from other parts of the body into the nervous system.

Neuron Structure – The structures of the Neuron cause the brain to properly function the way in which it does, each part with its own purpose.

How does an action potential move along the neuron fibre?
As an action potential travels down an axon there is a change in polarity across the membrane of the axon. The impulse travels down the axon in one direction only, to the axon terminal where it signals other neurons.
Neurons communicate in sending signals in what to do next.
Synapse
Above is the structure of the Synapse
The junction between the axis and the dendrites where that cause neurons to an electrical or chemical signal to another neuron.  A neurotransmitter is released there.  A chemical that allows one neuron to talk to the next neuron and continue sending the impulse.
  • Information from one neuron flows to another neuron across a synapse. The synapse contains a small gap separating neurons

The Glory is in You

In a time so fragile in our lives, we evolve ever so consistently.  We watch the news only to have it dictate how we feel.  We create relationships to achieve a sense of fulfillment.  And we change, to eventually grow into who we dream of becoming.

In 17 years, I’ve learned only so much.   I know how to read, how to write, never to stay past curfew, and that as humans, we truly know nothing.  I know that we pretend to know when we never are certain.  All we know is that we don’t and we never will.  Life is spent going towards finding a “meaning.”  Truths are found is science and facts for some, and for others, it’s found in books and art.

I created my magazine, Know-It-All Mag to understand and to feel understood.  I’ve had many outlets serve as exactly that for me prior to beginning our website: Rookie Mag, the Dissect podcast and various songs I’ve heard throughout my life.  In Rookie Mag, a shy thirteen-year-old girl found a voice she never thought she had.  In Dissect, she realized all words hold meaning, specifically the words in which her favorite songwriter, Frank Ocean, used to express himself.  And in songs, she found out that emotions are always recycled. Never going without being felt by someone who existed at one point.

An emotion motivated by our pride is passion.  Some of my passions include my family, writing, and my magazine.  Believing yourself makes your passion worthwhile, I’ve realized.  When I don’t believe in what I do, all feels dull and sluggish.  I’ve felt as though I’m never good enough for anything.  Before it all began, this is how I felt towards myself and my work.   Various magazines would reject pieces I had worked so hard on, and my talents definitely didn’t find itself in anything athletic, nor academic. My talents are in art, in thinking creatively, and in questioning. Asking other people how they feel and what they’ve lived through. To me, that is the most important knowledge of all; that of us.

Many of the young adults in which submit to my magazine are those that don’t feel heard in their world.  Their passion though is new and pure… And not taken seriously because of young age.  This is what had motivated me to start it in the first place, no site wanted to read what I had to write and many people who have reached out have gone through the same. If I had a say in how society works, I would shed more light on the youth, on our futures.  This has been a goal of mine and I am so proud each time I receive an email with photos, poetry, and stories.

Lastly, I hope to not fear too much of the future, as I have since I was a child.  I hope to encapsulate the thoughts and experiences that I’ve never come close to feeling, through the words I write, and the words to be shared on the Eddy.  I hope to give a platform to those who could have never imagined having one.  To find success in what I’ve always loved.  As this is currently my last year in high school, I hope to look back at it with pride in accomplishing all that I wanted to.  I’ve worried throughout many nights that it won’t be possible, but I believe in myself and I believe in my generation.  We will cause movements unlike any other, we will cause waves to crash, and we will cause trees and plants to grow.

Fahrenheit 451 Reflection

For our presentation, I took the role of the discussion director.  I got my role as the discussion director after it was the position that interested the rest of my team the least.  Although I found myself a bit nervous to take on the role, I know that often, between those I am closest to, sparking a conversation is far from difficult for me.

One of the tools that I used lots while working on my questions and answers was creative thinking.  I didn’t want my answers to be bland and made without much thought.  I told myself that if the question I asked was “basic,” I would reach further outside of the box for an answer that was more complex and obscure.  Creative thinking is the exact tool that needs us to stop and think about possibilities, something that held so much importance for my role as the discussion director.

Another tool that was absolutely necessary for my part was communication.  I adore listening and understanding what others have to say.  So many things aid to form our opinions so, in a discussion, hearing the insights of others can not only be beneficial for saying what you need to say, but it can also add to what you think.  Communication is something so important, not only as a role in this project but as a role in our lives.  I grew up being afraid to talk in front of people I didn’t know too well, today, this is something that is still difficult.  This presentation though, for the most part, I was able to articulate all that I had to say.

To summarize, the use of multiple competencies was absolutely necessary to have while doing this project.  They not only furthered my own role, but they helped further the roles of my teammates.

A Piece by a Friend of Mine – Blog log #2 – Isabella B.

Blog Log: An Open Letter from a Teenage Muslim Girl

This article is written by Nazaaha Penick

For my second blog log, I decided that it would be interesting to talk of an article I would consider underrated.  Over the course of a few months, the writer of the article, Nazaaha Penick has become a good friend of mine.  Not only was she the first contributor to my online magazine, but she also is an excellent writer.  In this piece, she covers the sentiments felt prior to the hateful shooting that arrived in a mosque in New Zealand. Penick, being a young, Muslim girl, told her story from a perspective that many ignore.  It is a piece so personal that has left me in awe of who she is and what she stands for.  Personally, I love hearing the stories of others. The hardships, the goals, and the past of others are what leads to the comprehension and the connection between each of us.  Penick’s article found its place on a platform I created.  I can’t help the sense of pride established from having what you constructed mean something to other people.  Penick aimed to use Know-It-All to amplify her voice, and that is what she did.  And I hope this alone is as important to other people as it is to us.

James Baldwin : Pessimist, Optimist, Hero – Blog #1

Article :  https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/31/arts/design/james-baldwin-david-zwirner-exhibition.html

I am intrigued by the life of James Baldwin.  A few years ago, I found the writings of him and, although I haven’t gotten a hold of any of his novels yet, I still see all that he has accomplished in his life as inspirational and powerful.  Something that I would love to adapt as a journalist one day.  He used his voice to fight and to help people understand the struggles they wouldn’t be able to without hearing the story of another. He paved the way for many people of colour as well as queer people, serving as an icon for both groups of minorities.   The writer of this article showcases that anybody can have an open mind and understand the hardships of others without relating to them personally.  His writing personal and idiosyncratic.  For humans, there has existed such a separation between different groups solely based on differences, an action that has ignited the most bitter of wars and conflicts.   This article though is proof that through literature and the sharing of trials and tribulations, we can begin to truly understand what it is that separates us from the next.  This can be seen in many worldly events.  When an interviewer invites someone to interview, for example, an interviewer like Oprah Winfrey, this is an invitation to the public to begin to understand.  This article for me was a journalist opening himself up to trying to understand the compelling, intriguing life and mind of no other than James Baldwin.
