Yesterday we learned how the establishment of a settlement in Red River for Scottish farmers impacted the HBC, NWC, and Metis. Decisions were made without consulting those who were living and working in the region.

By the 1860s, the fur trade is in decline – profits are low and the HBC is looking to sell Rupert’s Land.  England wants them to sell the area to Canada.  What will happen when these 2 groups negotiate the deal?  Will the citizens of the Red River be included or asked?  How will the transfer of this territory into Canada as Manitoba, the 5th province of Confederation, impact the Metis?

You have another fill in the blanks summary activity to complete in OneNote.  You will use pp. 155-160 from Chapter 4 in Horizons (this chapter is posted on Teams-Unit 5 channel-Files).
*Don’t forget to use the Word Bank at the end of the assignment – all the answers are there!

In the final 30 minutes of class we will watch a video to reinforce today’s learning.

HOMEWORK:  Complete the fill in the blanks summary “How Manitoba was brought into Confederation”

Let’s begin by reviewing how First Nations were impacted by their participation in the fur trade and use our knowledge to practice writing thesis statements.

Next, we will look at how the Metis were impacted by their participation in the fur trade.  Similarly they incurred benefits and drawbacks from working in the fur trade.

The HBC will begin to make decisions in Rupert’s Land that will have a direct impact on the fur trade as well as the Metis.  You have a fill in the blanks activity to complete in OneNote.  The PDF reading is posted on Teams-Unit 5 channel-Files.

Today we get to start a new unit!  After Confederation, Canada turned its attention to acquiring more land to grow the country and set its sights westward.

Why did Canada want to bring this land into the country?  It was full of valuable resources, specifically beavers!  We will start this unit learning more about the fur trade to understand why this land was so coveted by Canada and others!

  1. Guided notes on the fur trade and companies
  2. Video introduction
  3. Learning more about the fur trade companies

Work will be completed in OneNote (in the Unit 5 section) and the reading you will need can be found on Teams-Unit 5 channel-Files.
