Lab: Observing cells

cheek animal cell:                                                                                             onion plant cell:

1A) What do plant cells look like under the microscope? What cell structures are visible?

In my lab, they look like long strips. I can see the cell walls and the cell membranes.

1B) What do plant cells look like under the microscope? What cell structures are visible?

In my lab, they look like little dots and some weird shaped lines. I can only see the cell walls

2) How can you tell plant cells and animal cells apart (if you only see them under the microscope)?

The difference for me is that I can see the cell membrane in the plant cell, and that the animal cell is a circle and the plant cell is a rectangular shape.

3) We used methylene blue on the animal cell. Why was it important to treat animal cells with this compound? Why didn’t we use it on the plant cells?

I think that we used the blue dye for the cheek cells so it was easier to tell the cells from the air bubbles and since it was in clumps, compared to the onion skin, it was laid out kind of in a pattern.

4) Reflection:
What did you learn while doing this lab?
What questions arose while doing this lab? What are you curious about?

I learned that not both animal and plant cells are together in clumps, only the animal cells were in clumps together. I also learned that animals cells are circular and plant cells are rectangular.

some questions that arose to me were:  – How can we tell which structure is which (like the mitochondria, vacuole, etc) ?
